Does Disney Hate Dads?

Does Disney Hate Dads? 2018-06-17T20:48:27-05:00 Pamela Patnode

Because I am almost 50 years old, I grew up in an era when dads (within the entertainment industry) were portrayed with respect and dignity. In literature, television, and movies, I was immersed in an idea of fatherhood that seems to be disappearing from the big screen.

Growing up, I read about fathers of integrity such as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird and Charles Ingalls in the Little House on the Prairie series. On television, in addition to “Leave it to Beaver” and “My Three Sons,” I watched Mr. Cunningham from the “Happy Days” sitcom and Mr. Brady from “The Brady Bunch” guide their families with love, dignity, and respect. Although these fictional families faced silly situations and (at times) serious circumstances, the fathers portrayed by Hollywood and Disney were often upstanding men of good character.

Today, if a father is portrayed at all – and with Disney, men appear to be less and less important in their animated films – when fathers are portrayed, they tend to look like bumbling idiots or morally questionable characters.

That is a shame.

Father’s Day

As we celebrate this Father’s Day, I want to applaud all of the good fathers in our world today. You know all-too-well that the secular media is trying to tarnish your image. However, your families recognize and appreciate all that you do.

As men, you bring indispensable qualities to family life. To all of you dads who work hard to support your family, love your spouse, and raise your children – I thank you. Our families need you, our nation needs you!

We Need Dads as Role Models!

Because the media refuse to portray your true dignity, we need your witness – we need you as role models more than ever before. Our kids need you to be an example of manhood, of fatherhood, of self-sacrifice, of integrity, of honesty, of hard-work, and of love – characteristics that are not popular in the culture today.

While the news, popular movies, and reality TV try to blur the lines between male and female and promote a message of “if it feels good do it” – I thank you for living your lives in a different manner – one that is for the good of your family.

Thank You Dads!

Quietly and humbly the fathers of our nation are sacrificing time and pleasure so their kids can succeed. Day after day, good men are fighting the temptation against pervasive porn in an effort to show true love and respect to their wives and daughters. Week after week, these good fathers are volunteering in their communities to help children and families. Year after year these fine men serve our nation in the armed forces, as first responders, as teachers, as custodians, as postal workers, as doctors, as businessmen, as repairmen and construction workers, as farmers, and the list goes on.

As a woman, I understand that many women are also serving our nation and their families in heroic ways. I thank all of you with tremendous sincerity.

Today, however, as we celebrate Father’s Day, I want to extend a thank you to my own dad, my father-in-law, my husband, and all of the good fathers in our world today. The cultural revolution tries to downplay your importance and disgrace you. I do not. I thank you. Our families need you now more than ever.

God bless you and Happy Father’s Day!
