Evangelicals and the Politics of Jesus – The Moral Minority and Conservatism

Last updated on: November 20, 2012 at 5:47 pm   By Kurt Willems

The following is a guest article, written by David Swartz. He is a Mennonite, historian, and a professor at Asbury University. His new book is called Moral Minority: The Evangelical Left in an Age of Conservatism.  —————————————————- When I tell people about my recently released book Moral Minority: The Evangelical Left in an Age of Conservatism, I sometimes get a snort in response: “The evangelical left? All three of them!?” This quip has some basis in reality. Polls from the election show... Read more

The todays and tomorrows of this election – a reflection

Last updated on: November 6, 2012 at 6:25 am   By Kurt Willems

Today many of us will vote. Tomorrow many of us will gloat. Today many of us are torn. Tomorrow some of us will mourn. Today many of us think we’re right. Tomorrow this might cause fresh fights. Today some wonder if our candidate is actually “pro-life.” Tomorrow we keep praying for the unborn, the war-torn, the death row inmates, the poor, the disabled, the elderly, the marginalized, those not fitting our “normal” social categories, the undocumented immigrants doing all the... Read more

Why do (or don’t) you identify with a political party?

Last updated on: November 5, 2012 at 10:45 am   By Kurt Willems

It seems to me that Jesus had an interesting habit: critiquing both sides. He was a strong critic of every religio–political party in Israel. He critiqued the Sadducees for not believing resurrection, amongst other things (one being the way in which they metaphorically got into bed with Roman Empire at times). He critiqued the Pharisees for their legalism and a neglect of the poor. And he criticized those who identified as “Zealots” for their nationalistic tendencies. Jesus spoke truth to... Read more

How to pledge allegiance to Jesus on Election Day

Last updated on: November 4, 2012 at 7:04 am   By Kurt Willems

Excerpt from Mark Schloneger on CNN.com: Our fears, our hopes, our worries and our struggles are the currency that buys our votes. And how do politicians and their supporters acquire this precious currency? They invest billions of dollars to foment fear, inspire hope, create worry and exploit our struggles. It’s a power play. Some of us are pawns, and some of us are participants. But some of us are choosing a different part. I initiated the Election Day Communion Campaign... Read more

After the election of a new President, we will still…

Last updated on: November 2, 2012 at 11:37 pm   By Kurt Willems

*To be clear, I did not write this. I do think it is making a great point about not investing “messianic” like hopes into another election… Excerpt From Mike at “NewChurchCA:” ….The truth is that it doesn’t matter who is elected in November. Next year, when January turns into February, and the President sits comfortably in the White House, nothing will have changed. America’s economy will still be completely dependent upon enabling humans to kill other humans. We will still occupy other nations despite... Read more
