Dancing in the Leaves
This autumn’s news is much like every autumn’s. Wars drag on, prices climb, politicians quarrel, and the experts cannot agree whether the end will come by fire, flood, or algorithm. We scroll, we worry, and we feel someone ought to do something about it.
Yet for Snoopy…
Snoopy is wonderfully subversive. The world is full of people who need a cause, a campaign, a grievance, or at least a strong opinion about the state of civilisation. Snoopy needs a pile of leaves.
He dances in it, throws himself about with abandon, and finally announces, “I’m hooked on autumn!” Those who know him will know he’s hooked on all the seasons.
We have made happiness an extraordinarily complicated business. We pursue it through self-fulfilment, personal development, lifestyle choices, and the careful cultivation of our own importance. Snoopy finds it in the garden, courtesy of a season he did not invent and a tree that has not consulted him about its plans.
Chesterton would have appreciated the joke. The world is brimming with wonders, and our chief difficulty is that we keep demanding something more wonderful. We want to be astonished by the extraordinary while stepping over the ordinary. We search for meaning at the ends of the earth, when it may be lying in a heap outside the back door, waiting for us to jump in.
There is a Christian lesson here, though Snoopy would probably be alarmed to discover that his dancing had acquired theological significance. Creation is a gift before it is a resource, a spectacle before it is a problem to be solved. The leaves fall without asking our permission, and for a little while the world offers us beauty that we have neither earned nor purchased.
Gratitude begins when we stop treating such things as background scenery.
Autumn also reminds us that everything passes. The days shorten, and even Snoopy must eventually come indoors. But Christianity has never taught that things become worthless as they pass. The God who made the seasons also entered time, accepted the limits of mortal life, and transformed an ending into a beginning.
We need not turn every pleasure into a sermon. Sometimes a leaf is just a leaf, and a dog is just a dog enjoying himself. But perhaps one mark of grace is the ability to receive a simple pleasure without demanding it justify itself.
So let the philosophers debate the meaning of life, let the politicians rearrange it, and let the anxious modern soul devise another programme for becoming happy. Snoopy has found a better use for the afternoon. He is dancing in the leaves.
And if that isn’t a small reason to thank God, we may have made religion almost as complicated as happiness.
Thank you!
