Things Christians (and Catholics) Need to Hold Onto with Both Hands! 2022-08-16T17:43:06-06:00 Dennis Knapp
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
Recently, I read an article on Patheos stating 10 things Christians need to reform right now and it got me thinking about things Christians need to hold on to with both hands. Below are seven things I think Christianity must hold onto with both hands for the good of the world—four to address Christianity as a whole, followed by three more specifically for Catholics. These are in no particular order.
General Christian
- Proper theology: There is currently a wave of Christians deconstructing their faith. Deconstruction means to jettison traditional Christian beliefs for more progressive Christianity. Christans must not fall for this trap and must hold onto these hard-won beliefs with both hands. The beliefs include: the Trinity, the Incarnation, and all beliefs known as mere Christianity.
- Traditional values: Christians must not abandon their values. This means sticking to a belief in two-parent families with one mom and one dad. This also means a rejection of any alternative lifestyles that go against the plan God intended for the human family.
- Belief in Hell: Christians must not abandon belief in Hell. This belief is rooted in historical Christianity and divine revelation. A belief in Hell also affirms free will and justice. For humanity’s true freedom requires the ability to choose separation from God and the judgement of evil. To reject a belief in Hell is to reject human freedom and the balance of the scales of justice in the life of the world to come.
- The Proper View of the Body: Christianity must not jettison its belief in the body created by God as male and female (Genesis 1:27). To hold onto this view, Christians MUST vigorously reject modern gender theory in all its incarnations. The reality is that many of the youth in the Church reject the proper view of the body and have fallen into the gender ideality trap. If we do not move fast to retake lost ground, our youth will suffer.
Catholics
- Confession/Reconciliation: Catholics must go to Confession/Reconciliation. Our current culture tries to excuse or explain away sin as “natural” and “who we are” as humans. This is the furthest from the truth. God created us to the be holy and we must pursue holiness with all our hearts. This does not mean we do not fail—we do. When we fail, we must go before God in the sacrament of Confession/Reconciliation and make it right. Here is a good link to an examination of conscience. A good verse to understand the sins to avoid is 1 Corinthians 6:9-11.
- The Catechism of the Catholic Church: The Catechism is a gift to the Catholic Church. It summarizes all Catholic dogma and doctrine in a systemic way. All Catholics must hold onto this amazing resource (and follow the teaching contained within it).
- The Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist: Pew Research did a study in 2019 and found that only 28% of confessing Catholics believe in the Real Presence. This number jumps to 68% in Catholics who attend Mass regularly. Catholics must hold on to this belief if we are to make a significant impact in the world. The belief in the Real Presence is a belief in God physically encountering the world through bread and wine.
To Conclude
This is my list of MUSTS for both Christians in general and Catholics in particular. What do you think should be added to this list? Comment below.
