THERE are buildings set aside for people who wish to deliver sermons. Lots of them. They are called places of worship, where one can spew biblical baloney to one’s heart’s content and harvest a healthy crop of “Amens” and “Hallelujahs”.

So it’s especially troubling that Republican Congressman Madison Cawthorn, above, a member of the US House of Representatives from North Carolina’s 11th district, chose last week to use the House and not a church to deliver a religious forced birther message – one that followed speech in which he urged “vicious women” to raise “monsters.”

The Daily Kos provides the full transcript of the far-right Trumpite’s sermon to lawmakers:

Madam Speaker, imagine you’ve just walked out of this chamber and outside is a gorgeous sunset. You have a Polaroid camera and you snap a beautiful picture, and a great photo prints out the front. You hold it and shake it, waiting for the picture to appear, but suddenly someone walks by and snatches your photo, ripping it to shreds.

You’re stunned. You cry, ‘Why did you destroy my picture?’ The person replies, ‘Oh, it wasn’t a picture. It wasn’t fully developed yet.’

All of us in this room realize how asinine that reasoning is. That photo was transforming into a beautiful image. This illustration by Seth Gruber is simple, but it’s what our nation has done to the most precious image of all – the image of God.

Gruber, above, according to his website, is:

A professional public speaker focused on equipping Christians and pro-life advocates to make a gracious, winsome, and persuasive case of their pro-life beliefs in the public square. His approach, while not shying away from the moral question of abortion, focuses on giving you the tools you need to effectively and lovingly engage your co-workers, friends, and family members on the issue of abortion.

Cawthorn went on:

Madam Speaker, a silent genocide has slipped beneath the conscience of America. Precious works of our creator, formed and set apart, meet death before they breathe life. Eternal souls woven into earthen vessels sanctified by almighty God and endowed with the miracle of life are denied their birth by a nation that was born in freedom.

God’s breath of life blown away by the breath of man. This cruel and fallen world may seem too filthy for their very presence, but these precious temples are crafted in the image of God himself. One day, perhaps when science darkens the soul of the left, our nation will repent. But until then the carnage of this unconscionable deed will stain the fabric of our nation. I hope that the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. I hope that we stop the genocide of abortion in this country. With that, I yield back.

Second Nexus reproduces a number of furious tweets that followed this utterly deranged tirade.

Cawthorn, who once posed for pictures at Adolf Hitler’s vacation retreat, claimed society wants to “de-masculate young men” because:

They don’t want people who are going to stand up. All you moms here – the ones who I said are the most vicious in our movement – if you are raising a young man, please raise them to be a monster.

It appears that his parents did precisely that during the time they home-schooled him. His attitude towards women can only be described as monstrous.

After this remarks were met with widespread criticism Cawthorn’s spokesman offered the following excuse-making response, according to Chauncey DeVega, writing for Salon:

In the context of his speech Congressman Cawthorn was urging parents to raise their sons as strong, godly, men who are warriors for truth and morality. Monsters and lions, not wimps and sheep.

This from Wikipedia:

In August 2020, during Cawthorn’s campaign for Congress, several women came forward accusing him of sexually aggressive behavior, sexual misconduct, and sexual assault. Katrina Krulikas described an incident when she was 17 and Cawthorn was 19 in which Cawthorn pressured her to sit on his lap and attempted to kiss her forcefully twice, which she resisted.

Cawthorn did not deny the allegations, but said, “I did try and kiss her, just very normal, just in a flirtatious way”, adding, “If I did make her feel unsafe, I feel bad”, but questioned the timing of her allegation. His campaign characterized Krulikas’s allegations as politically motivated, which she denied,

After Krulikas made her allegations, three other women made allegations of sexual misconduct against Cawthorn, including forcible grabbing and kissing. One woman said Cawthorn called her “just a little blonde, slutty American girl” when she rejected his sexual advances.

On October 17, 2020, a group of Patrick Henry College alumni released a public letter accusing Cawthorn of “sexually predatory behavior” while he was a student there for little more than one semester, as well as of vandalism and lying. The letter originally had 10 signatories but the number increased to over 150 alumni.

A February 2021 BuzzFeed News investigation found 20 people who said that Cawthorn had harassed his female classmates during college; the reporters spoke to four women who said that Cawthorn had harassed them.

It was alleged that Cawthorn often recklessly drove women in his car to remote areas off campus while asking them sexual questions, which he called “fun drives”. Two resident assistants said they warned women to avoid Cawthorn and not to ride in his car. A male acquaintance said Cawthorn bragged about pulling a woman into his lap and putting a finger between her legs.

DeVega wrote of Cawthorn’s alleged sexual misconduct, and his latest outburst:

What might Jesus say about these allegations, Madison? I’m guessing he’d be less than impressed by your performative mewling. Then again, the Jesus you believe in still lives, so you can just ask him the next time you’re at Mar-a-Lago.

As as result of a car crash in 2014,  Cawthorn was partially paralysed, and he now uses a wheelchair. He said he accrued $3 million in medical debt during his recovery. He received that amount as settlement from an insurance company, as well as other payments, but  as of February 2021 he was seeking $30 million more.
