Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Witchcraft spells, rituals, and resources, all can be found online these days. Pinterest has many intriguing images. If you are lucky and click on an image, it will take you to a link with more information. The same goes for when you put “witchcraft” in the Google search engine. But how do you know what information is useful and what is, well, crap? Hopefully this post will help you to determine which ones are authentic and ethical verses those that… well just fall short.
I want to be a witch!
Okay, so you have declared your intention on becoming a witch. Now what?
This is where the fun or the frustration begins. If you are lucky enough to live near Salem, MA or New Orleans, most of your work is cut out for you. Unfortunately, there are many people who want to learn witchcraft that do not live close enough to matter. Worse yet, witch shops are scattered across the states but they are few and far between. Lucky for you, we now have the internet, and if you know where to go or what to look for, you have all the information that you need.
Caution
I know that you are so excited, now that you have made your declaration but slow down. Witchcraft has grown over the last few decades and seems to be the hot spirituality right now. There are a lot of good… useful… helpful information out there but also scams, fraud and just worthless, even dangerous stuff.
Online Schools
I saw this in a post on Facebook the other day. Someone asked if there were any good Wicca/Witchcraft schools online. My heart cringed as I looked at the suggestions from others. Some were great but not all. It is what actually prompted me to write this. When I was looking to be taught, there was a wonderful site called Witchvox. Unfortunately, they have taken down their web page and now are just a presence on Facebook. I found my first training coven there. They led me to my formal training and so forth. The training that they led me to is my very first recommendation.
The Temple of Witchcraft
Founded by Christopher Penczak, Steve Kenson and Adam Sartwell, The Temple of Witchcraft started locally but now with it’s online school, members are from all over the states and even parts of Europe. They have a five degree system that teaches everything from meditation, spell casting to high magick. This is my top recommendation as I have gone through the education piece myself. If you are serious about perusing your goal of being a witch, this is one of the best places to do it.
House of Grimassi
House of Grimassi offers two online options. Founded by Raven Grimassi and Stephanie Taylor. Raven wrote many books about Strega Witchcraft and you see it intertwined here. The respect that I have seen for these two in the past reflects the gift of their teachings. I assure you, that you will not be disappointed.
Black Rose Witchcraft
If you are looking for a modern approach to Witchcraft, Black Rose Witchcraft may be what you are looking for. Chas Bogan, Storm Faerywolf and Devin Hunter run this one. All three have books and a wealth of knowledge. If you would like more on this tradition, please check out the post from my friend Mat Auryn, “What is Black Rose Witchcraft?”
People to follow
I have had the good fortune to live close enough to Salem, MA to meet some really awesome people. Many of them, you probably have heard about, but even if you haven’t, give a thought to checking them out. Following professional witches (just meaning the ones out in the publically) can help you to learn. They may even introduce you to some new thoughts and ideas. If any of these folks are authors, I have also included a link to my favorite book of theirs.
Christopher Penczak
My respect for Christopher is deep. He literally knows everything. Okay, I know I may be exaggerating a little but if you have ever attended one of his workshops, you may agree maybe not. The library of books that Penczak has written is quite extensive but since it is almost Valentine’s Day, I would recommend “The Witch’s Heart; The magick of perfect love and perfect trust.” If you are looking to start your studies to learn more about becoming a witch, a copy of his book, “The Inner Temple of Witchcraft” will get your magick rumbling.
Mat Auryn
Patheos own “For Puck’s Sake” blogger Mat Auryn, is someone to keep your eye on. He has a new book, “Psychic Witch” that is off to a tremendous release.
Devin Hunter
It is hard to keep up with Devin Hunter. It seems like there is something always around the corner. Whether it be a new book, workshop or online something or enough, I wonder what kind of magick he does to get so much accomplished. He has a new book out that looks of great interest. Check out his “Modern Witch Spells, Recipes and Workings.”
Nicholas Pearson
I met Nicholas two or so years ago and have been impressed every since. His knowledge with the Crystal world in itself is overwhelming. Nicholas is the author of some great reads including my personal favorite “Stones of the Goddess.” Keep your eye on Nicholas Pearson, I know he has much more to come.
Useful Links
Now that you know who to follow and where to get your training, you may want to buy some candles and magickal tools. Here are some useful places to shop, stalk and visit often.
Azure Green
Did you know that you do not have to own a store to shop from Azure Green? You will find much of what you may need here at discounted or reasonable prices. Most of the shops you visit, buy from Azure Green, so why not go directly to the source and save a few pennies in the process. Athames, Chalices, altar clothes, candles and incense, delivered to your door.
Holyclothing
If you want to look witchy, this is a great place to start. Whether it is ritual wear or just dressing up to please your inner witch, this is the place to do it. They even have sizes up to 5x for the plus size Goddess.
The hardest thing about looking online for the craft, is finding who is authentic and who is not. Do your homework before signing up for anything. Talk to current or former students. Look at google an yelp for reviews and even Facebook to see what they are like and/or up to. Ask around and when you feel like your are satisfied and it feels like a fit, then check in with your intuition and move forward to the next stage of your journey.
