You have decided that you are called to follow Witchcraft but where and how do you start?
How do you learn and where do you connect to your coven, your tribe, your deities? Do you want to be solitary? Okay, but how do you know how to cast a circle, what incense to use, and most of all how to protect yourself?
Books to start with
Excitement builds as you run out to the local bookstore. There are so many titles, authors and subjects, all embracing a piece of the knowledge that you eagerly seek.
The Truth About Witchcraft Today by Scott Cunningham is a simply read with loads of information. Even if you think you know what you are getting into, this book is a valuable tool to educate relatives, friends and co-workers.
Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham is good to start building your basics. Really any book by Scott Cunningham is wonderful. He is old-school but his teachings are still valued in the modern world practices.
To Ride a Silver Broomstick by Silver RavenWolf is a good go to. I used this book when I was first studying witchcraft. I also think the two that follow are good starters.
The Inner Temple of Witchcraft by Christopher Penczak. I cannot recommend this book enough if you are looking to make a commitment to yourself as well as witchcraft. This book is set up in lessons that you complete in 13 months. The result is a strong foundation to build upon and work with.
The Power of the Witch by Laurie Cabot. Where would I be if I did not mention this lovely lady that I have had the pleasure of working with. Not only is she an icon to Salem, MA and to our modern witchcraft, she is a wealth of knowledge.
Connecting to your Tribe
Books in hand, you like what you are reading but know that you are missing something. It is time to go out and find like minded folks. Here are some links to help you find your tribe.
Witches’ Voice is a website that is extremely useful for the new and old witch. This is where I found the first coven that I worked with and many friends as well. Here you can plug in your state and see where the closest coven or group is to you. There are also pagan clergy, personals, and offerings listed here.
Other places to look for local connections are Meet-up, where you can start your own group is there is not already one and social media sites like Facebook will have event listings. Recently I found a Pagan Pizza night locally that I never knew about. Again, if you do not find one, do not be afraid to start one, you may be surprised how may folks are just waiting to meet their tribe too.
Online Courses
If you plug “witchcraft online courses” into your search engine, you will find pages upon pages of courses being offered. Like the books that you rumbled through before consorting someone you trusted, the same goes for online courses. There are good ones, great ones and ones, well, you should run from. Here are a few of my favorites:
The Temple of Witchcraft Mystery School is in-person or online.
I have to rave about this one as it is the course that I have taken. I can promise you that you will not only learn a tremendous amount of information, you will become a different but wonderful being.
Ash, Birch and Willow Tradition – Course of Study
This is a great online course for beginning students. I have many friends who love this course.
I have not personally taken this course but it is on my bucket list. I do know some folks that have taken it and really enjoyed it.
Where would I be if I did not mention my own upcoming course, combining Witchcraft and Fairy Tales. This course is through email correspondences and private Facebook Group community.
Hopefully, some of the links here will help you and you will be off to a great start. The most important thing as a beginning witch is to come with open ears and open eyes. If something seems amiss it is, use your intuition to guide you to where you need to be. Unfortunately there are some sites, groups and individuals that may want to lead you astray from what witchcraft is. Do your research! Look at reviews and ask others your trust or admire. A true Priest or Priestess will most always be willing to help.
