Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
Kay Lindahl is a dedicated spokesperson for the interfaith movement, an ordained interfaith minister and an Honorary Canon to the Cathedral Center of St. Paul in the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. She is also a speaker, retreat leader, and author of “The Sacred Art of Listening”.
When I am acting from the feminine aspect of the Divine I find myself much more attentive to Her voice. I listen from a deeper place and I become aware of the wisdom She is always sharing but which I don’t always hear. Tears often come to my eyes as I open up to the beauty all around me. Listen, She tells me, listen to life!
When I listen to the Divine Feminine I notice her presence with all of my senses. She appears in the touch of the wind that caresses my skin, the sight of the clouds that fly across the sky, the scent of lilacs in the spring, the sound of the ocean, the taste of dark chocolate! She is also there in the intimate connections with my beloved, family, friends. Listen, acknowledge, appreciate, is the message.
Most recently I learned to listen to my body, as I fractured a bone in my right arm, near the shoulder. This meant immobilization for four weeks, not moving the upper arm on my dominant side. In addition to breathing through the pain, (same as in giving birth!) I noticed how much my body was telling me about what to do. Sometimes it was advice – like get another pillow, time for a pain pill now, or you don’t need it yet. Take a long bath – buy some Epsom salts to soak in. You need more protein. She’s very practical! Other times it was just a knowing that it’s OK to be still. Paying attention to my energy level was another gift of the Divine Feminine. I ask my body if it is ready, rather than forging ahead. There is such grace in this listening.
My work in the world is to teach people how to prepare to listen. When people find out this is what I do, one of the first things they say to me is – that’s wonderful! We could all learn how to listen better. This is followed almost immediately by – Would you talk to my husband, my wife, my partner, my children, my boss, my sister, my brother. It seems each of us has at least one person we would like to listen to us better.
Listening deeply is a gift we are either giving or receiving. It is being so fully present to another person that we are not aware of anything else. Time stands still. We sense the presence of the Divine with us. It is what we are yearning for when we say we wish someone would listen to us.
As we act from the Divine Feminine we learn to slow down, take a breath and listen to Her, to ourselves and to each other. Some say that being listened to is so close to being loved, that most people cannot tell the difference. Listen!
