Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
I try to keep my writing as succinct as possible. So this blog is an attempt to take it to a new level.
I’m not a fan of organized religion.
As succinctly as possible. I will try to explain.
1. Religion has no room for our grief.
It promises to help us, it intends to help us, but because it’s an organization, it cannot.
2. Most of the money and resources are wasted.
70% of its income goes to building maintenance and paying salaries. No time is left for healing the wounded.
3. The church doesn’t put us first
Because it’s an organization, it needs of the organization come first, always!
4. The key-man concept stifles all creativity and growth.
We can never be who we should be if everybody is not part of the discussion, and questions are not allowed.
5. Spiritual bypassing does not allow for healing.
Catch phrases and our tendency to be uncomfortable with tough stuff causes us to bypass people’s suffering, then hurt people hurt people and the cycle continues.
6. Jesus wouldn’t go to church.
To make a long story short, the church doesn’t work in the 21st century and it wasn’t what Jesus imagined. Organizational religion was developed by Constantine and in that era, and we have been doing it wrong for millenia.
7. The church doesn’t meet the needs of the 21st century
Most of the services the church provides could be obtained for free.
Note: Laura and I wrote a book a couple of years ago called The Desert Sanctuary: Thriving Outside Organized Religion. It will be published on 8/15. Stay tuned!
