The Desolation of Smaug, a Comedy of sorts…

Last updated on: January 25, 2017 at 6:54 pm By Katrina Fernandez

… I don’t think Tolkien set out to write a comedy in The Hobbit. I also don’t think Peter Jackson had set out to film a comedy in The Desolation of Smaug. But my word… what an unintentionally hilarious movie it was. It was like Pirates of the Caribbean with Dwarves. And similar to everything Hollywood touches, the book and movie have very little in common. It was a fun action film, I’ll give it that, but the love triangle... Read more

Resolutions, No. Confession, Yes. Patron Saints for 2014, Double Yes…

Last updated on: January 25, 2017 at 7:17 pm By Katrina Fernandez

… I’m not into resolutions; that’s what confession’s for. A lot of people put great stock into making resolutions each New Year. They promise to improve on some virtue or remove some vice. The ultimate goal is a better version of our current selves. Admirable yes, but why wait till the end of the year to propose such changes? Look at it like this; New Year’s is like one big examination of conscience and our resolutions are acts of contrition.... Read more

Pot Pies That Won’t Kill You…

Last updated on: January 10, 2015 at 9:38 pm By Katrina Fernandez

… I cooked something that didn’t suck. It’s a Christmas miracle. Since no one died of food poisoning or got violent diarrhea I deem the recipe worthy enough to share. I think I’ll call it … USING ALL THE LEFTOVERS IN YOUR REF & STICKING IT IN A PIE … WITH BUTTER. Ingredients Leftover meat (I used the remains of the Christmas turkey carcass) Frozen Veggies (whatever’s in there getting freezer burn) Potatoes (I like the small yellow potatoes because... Getting All Christmas Rant-y Up in this piece…

Last updated on: January 10, 2015 at 9:38 pm By Katrina Fernandez

Mary’s pregnancy was not unplanned, m’kay. It was perfectly planned by God. To say that Mary’s pregnancy was unplanned implies an accident of chance and diminishes Her powerful “yes” to God’s will. The fact that she willingly accepted to become the Mother of God shows us that the Incarnation was not a mere unplanned event. God sought Mary’s permission and she obediently accepted. There was nothing unplanned about this miraculous event at all. Capisce? And all this bosh about the... Read more

Slow Cook All The Things…

Last updated on: January 10, 2015 at 9:38 pm By Katrina Fernandez

… I got a new crock pot for Christmas! I’m so excited. Gone all the days of shriveled meat pucks and cereal for dinner. I still might start that cooking blog, Burnt Offerings. My mind is wild with endless dinner possibilities, although I’ve never cooked anything other than chili in my old crock pot. Beans are cheap, see. I made a plea on facebook to share with me some of your favorite slow cooker recipes and resources. Of course Simcha... Read more

Last updated on: January 10, 2015 at 9:38 pm By Katrina Fernandez

… What?! I have a blog?! You would never know judging from the frequency in which I post. This particular time of the year is such a whirlwind of do this, buy that, make all the memories. Here’s a re-hash. There was a Big Fat Puerto Rican Thanksgiving, followed by an aggressive game of Catch Pharse. There was the Christmas miracle of gifts, gas, and groceries from my Christmas angel. Oh, and there was this… Baxter, the Airedale Terrier mix... Read more

Those Horrible Catholics Down the Street…

Last updated on: January 10, 2015 at 9:38 pm By Katrina Fernandez

… That would be my family, of course. The same family that marked the arrival to our new home with big Catholic statuary in the yard, announcing to all … the papists are coming, the papists are coming! My evangelical neighbors have been cautious with us when allowing their children to play with my son. After all I let my son read Harry Potter and Greek mythology, which I’ve heard is tantamount to devil worship. Oh, and then there’s the... Read more

… Of of my favorite saints is St. Lucy for reasons too personal to explain. And if I tried it would probably sound crazy anyway. I do my own private thing to honor her but I always like to share some of my favorite artistic renditions of the saint. Related Link: Fr. D explains why she’s such an awesome saint.
