Book Review: Peggy Weber’s “Enough as You Are”
Last updated on: January 25, 2020 at 8:28 pm By JoAnna Wahlund
I’m so pleased to dust off my sadly-neglected blog (more on that in a later post!) in order to participate in the blog tour for “Enough as You Are” by Peggy Weber, published by Loyola Press. Weber has written a lovely book on overcoming self doubt and appreciating the gifts God has given you. What I liked best about this book is the calm, conversational tone and the ease of reading. I really felt like the author and I were... Read more

An Update, and Some Exciting News!
Last updated on: November 12, 2019 at 10:13 am By JoAnna Wahlund
October really flew by, didn’t it? I’ve been posting updates on The Catholic Working Mother Facebook page but have sadly neglected this blog! Here’s a brief recap: Peter’s Surgery Peter’s surgery took place on October 28 (there was a cancellation, so we were able to reschedule it for a day earlier; the check-in time was earlier in the morning, making it easier for Peter to fast before the surgery). It went very well. Coming out of anesthesia was a bit... Read more

What Does the Roman Catechism Teach about Working Mothers?
Last updated on: October 23, 2019 at 1:16 pm By JoAnna Wahlund
Those who claim that it’s a sin for Catholic mothers to work frequently use an excerpt from the Roman Catechism, promulgated by the Catholic Church in 1566 due to a directive by the Council of Trent, to prove their claim that mothers shouldn’t work outside the home. The excerpt they cite is from the section “Holy Matrimony,” and goes as follows: Duties Of A Wife On the other hand, the duties of a wife are thus summed up by the... Read more

Last updated on: September 29, 2019 at 6:36 pm By JoAnna Wahlund
This past June, I recorded an interview via Skype with the ladies of “The Gist.” The segment will air Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 11am Eastern Time. It will air again on Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 6pm Eastern. The show will also be available on streaming devices as well as the CatholicTV app. And don’t miss The Gist’s Instagram giveaway! They’ve got two copies of my book up for grabs, with the contest ending Oct. 6. Also, if you are in... Read more

First Casts Are Done!
Last updated on: September 13, 2019 at 10:46 am By JoAnna Wahlund
Peter had his first casts put on his legs and feet on Wednesday. He did great, all things considered. He wore his new Lightning McQueen headphones (a gift from a generous friend) and watched Scooby Doo in the iPad during the casting. He protested a little bit, but all in all he was a trooper about it. Just like his mama, his favorite color is blue, so that’s the color he chose for his first casts. He’s been able to... Read more

Casting and Surgery and Wheelchairs, Oh My
Last updated on: August 24, 2019 at 12:44 pm By JoAnna Wahlund
My youngest son, Peter, was born with bilateral clubfoot. He was only 3 days old when he started treatment, which consisted of six sets of groin-to-toe casts (one per week for six weeks), bilateral tenotomy surgery, another set of casts, and then wearing a set of custom orthotics known as a “boots and bar.” He wore the boots and bar for 23 hours a day for the first three months, and then 12 hours at night until he turned four... Was St. Gianna’s Life as a Working Mother Unrelated to Her Canonization?
Last updated on: August 19, 2019 at 7:16 am By JoAnna Wahlund
Backstory If you aren’t on Catholic Twitter (in which case, good for you), you may not be aware that there’s been a brouhaha over the weekend regarding working mothers. It started with Catholic author and podcaster Timothy Gordon appearing on Matt Fradd’s podcast and making the rather startling claim (see timestamp 45:42) that married women shouldn’t work outside the home. Subsequently, Matt Fradd posted a rebuttal article in which he clarified that he does not agree with Timothy Gordon on this... Read more

Pro-Life Isn’t About Oppressing Women
Last updated on: July 20, 2019 at 3:06 pm By JoAnna Wahlund
While listening to one of the more recent episodes of Trent Horn’s excellent podcast, Counsel of Trent — “#181 – DIALOGUE: Do pro-lifers oppress women?” — I heard my blog mentioned! Trent’s guest was Steve, a fellow Patheos blogger at the nonreligious channel’s Driven to Abstraction. Steve wrote a post titled “Pro-Life Is About Oppressing Women“ and linked to my post “Why Are Abortion Rights Advocates Anti-Science?” as an example of this oppression. Yes, apparently, I’m oppressing myself. via GIPHY After listening to the podcast... Read more

Selfie Contest Winner!
Last updated on: June 24, 2019 at 10:46 am By JoAnna Wahlund
Congratulations to Cathy Torrez for winning the selfie contest! Cathy won by leaving an Amazon review (the first one!) for my book, so I don’t have a selfie to share. However, here is her review! Congratulations, Cathy! (Also, if you go to the reviews you can see a one-star review left by a pro-abortion troll. She was subsequently kicked out of an abortion debate group we’re both in for doxxing. Fun, huh?) This summer has been exhausting already and June... Read more
