The 40 Day Journey

Day 12: Why are you eating?

Day 12: Why are you eating? 2015-03-02T19:49:03-07:00 MargaretAnne Overstreet

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Now that we have asked ourselves the first three questions …

1) Where does your food come from?

2) How was your food grown/raised?

3) When are you eating your food?

… and having taken time to consider the answers to these questions, what have we learned about our food and our food choices?

And – equally importantly – why are we choosing to eat what we’re eating?

In other words, are we fully aware of the justice implications of our lunch choice today? What ethical priorities are motivating tonight’s dinner menu?

Are our choices narrowed because of health factors or economic concerns? What is the total cost that we’re willing to pay for this meal: in dollars, in natural resources, in environmental damage, in health risks, in economic inequality, in animal welfare?

Is our food a commodity? a process of fueling our bodies? a way of attempting to fill up the empty places inside us?

Or is it something much more? Is it an experience of grace? a celebration of beauty? a sacramental ritual? a way of blessing and being blessed?
