Magic. We all know this word, but we tend to understand and use it in so many different ways. I think the less strict we get about what magic is, the more we experience it.

In a mood, the other day I tweeted the following:

Occasionally I’ll see folks write or say: “If everything’s magic, then nothing’s special.”
Y’all. Who hurt you? (Rhetorical).
You are a living bag of sentient animated star dust doing shit in the world, right now. How the fuck can you not see the world is magic?”

I was being a bit flip obviously, but there’s some excellent points at the heart of what I mean. And it’s something I tend to bring up on the regular.

One Word, Many Ideas

Magic is magic and a word means a thing right? Yes, but I think we’re better off understanding that words have not just a meaning, but often meaningS. Depending on who uses them, how, when, where, and why. In addition, how we speak or write a word can also alter its meaning and signal different ideas to different audiences. Even our own understanding of a word can change as our practice, path, and experience grows.

In this episode of 6 Minutes of Witchcraft, I talk about how my understanding of magic has evolved, from the spelling of the word itself to how it influences my personal path and practice. For me, magic is more than spells or grimoires – it exists outside of those things and is present all around us. It’s in the liminal and it’s in the little moments as well as the big ones. Going back to my tweet, seeing magic in the mundane and present outside of specific workings doesn’t make anything less special. It enables us to see more things as magical, taking note of the infinite tiny connections and possibilities. It’s not magic vs. science (or unknown vs. known), but seeing the magic in science and the science in magic – and beyond!

But it’s a lot more than that, which I explain below. I hope you not only find these ideas on magic inspiring, but also remember that we should all leave some room for growth.
