Myth plays a very important role in Witchcraft.  There is much wisdom to be discovered if we take the time to consider what’s coded in myth, how it can relate to our paths, and most specifically – how we use it to influence and inspire our practice. Folklore and mythology provide a foundation or pillar for how we formulate our path.

We can derive history, context and cultural relevance, practical and metaphysical protocol, and so much more from myths.  However most of that is only revealed when we look to the symbolism woven into the stories.  When we start to take myths too literally, we can miss the finer and most important points entirely.

I’m a huge fan of Myth. I talk about applying myth throughout my book Weave the Liminal – but if you skim, you might miss it. (Note: it’s not a book for skimming, sorry skimmers but you gotta slow your roll a bit.)  If you’re new to this blog, I’ve talked about the Truth of Myth before, as well as building new myths, and using myth as inspiration.

Anyway, enough writing – here’s the video – more after:

Technical notes: I tried using youtube livestream for this video and I’m meh about the results. I typically film 6 Minutes on my tablet, but it was giving me some grief last night (though that may have been the spirits up to something considering what I was going to put in that video lol).  I wasn’t getting any audio directly filming to my laptop, so I figured I’d try this instead.  I mean it works, but the sound could be better IMHO (but the external mic seemed too hot!).  It’s all a learning experience.

Anyway, I think it’s important to look at Myth as a tool. We should be careful about making it into dogma. Allow it to guide your path, but be careful of using it as a justification for shitty behavior and thinking.  I’m sure some people feel maybe I do that with Aradia, but I disagree.  The concept, as I see it, is “teach, guide, be your own savior, help others.”  Which is different than “women are the downfall of men/only people of special blood can do things/angels subscribe to the gender binary.”

Are you lifting up and inspiring with Myth? Or are you stomping down?  Myths can be made, rebuilt, reinterpreted, and refreshed. They live, grow, die, and are reborn with us.
