Join the RavenCast on Facebook Live this Wednesday at 1:00 Central as Suzanne Ross and Adam Ericksen discuss Holy Week and Pope Francis’ message, “Fake News and Journalism for Peace.” Join the live conversation through Facebook Live on the Raven Foundation Facebook page!
Holy Week is upon us. Christians throughout the world will soon commemorate the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday, Jesus’ death on Good Friday, and the Resurrection on Easter Sunday.
For Christians, Holy Week reveals something about the “truth” concerning God and the world. Of course, “truth” is a bad word in many circles. Truth claims often make me uncomfortable as they are easily used as weapons to beat down an opponent.
On the other hand, truth has been under assault from other quarters. Spin doctors in the Trump administration have played fast and loose with the truth, so much that we begin to wonder if the truth matters anymore.
And then there’s the allegation levied against “Fake News.” It’s as if we are living in the Matrix. Truth is under assault and we don’t know whom to trust.
Pope Francis reminds us in his message “Fake News and Journalism for Peace” that the “truth” has a certain spirit. He states,
An impeccable argument can indeed rest on undeniable facts, but if it is used to hurt another and to discredit that person in the eyes of others, however correct it may appear, it is not truthful. We can recognize the truth of statements from their fruits: whether they provoke quarrels, foment division, encourage resignation; or, on the other hand, they promote informed and mature reflection leading to constructive dialogue and fruitful results.
Suzanne and I invite you to join us as we discuss Pope Francis’ message about truth and Holy Week this Wednesday on the RavenCast. You can participate in the conversation by going to the Raven Foundation Facebook page at 1:00 Central!
