Reading Plague Novels In a Time of Pandemic

Last updated on: March 12, 2020 at 12:09 am   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

Still, King’s novel - as well as Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy, and novels dealing with historical plagues and pandemics, such as The Betrothed - remind us that at these times what we have to fear is not only the foreign germ or agent that infects our bodies, but the mindless chaos that resides within humanity itself. Read more

COVID-19 and Religion: Rash Providentialism Is Going To Get People Killed

Last updated on: March 10, 2020 at 11:25 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

“Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.” Read more

Variations on Atheism, and Atheists’ Views on Religion

Last updated on: March 9, 2020 at 12:00 am   By Guest Contributor

Other atheists go a good bit beyond The New Atheism and regard religion as a perfectly natural activity, perfectly human, understandable in anthropological and sociological terms (much like politics) but often misunderstood by practitioners who seemingly take religion to involve a description of the cosmos or, worse yet, an explanation of it.  Read more

In Case You Were Wondering, We Still Need Feminism

Last updated on: March 6, 2020 at 12:47 am   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

The women who are mourning the fact that Warren dropped out of the race - either because she was a candidate about whom they could be enthusiastic for the first time in their lives, or because she was the last woman candidate holding on, and now it’s back to the old white men again - may have gotten their hopes up because we want to think better of ourselves, as a nation. We want to believe that the feminist struggle is mostly in the past. Read more

Atheists and Christians: Are Atheists Deficient In Love?

Last updated on: March 7, 2020 at 11:30 pm   By Guest Contributor

Allow me to make two distinctions. Among other things in my years of research I found two quite different strands of atheism.  One strand clearly sees the meaning and even the value of religion while considering it imaginary.  The other strand takes religion to be an aberration of mind and spirit, a threat to the advancement and freedom of humanity, a passing fancy, the detritus of history. Following this second line of thought the Parliament of Iceland recently, and with but one negative vote, declared that religion is a mental illness. What a unique moment in the history of parliaments that was! Read more

The Inevitable Impotence of Male-Only “Authority”

Last updated on: February 26, 2020 at 12:45 am   By Guest Contributor

For the Holy Spirit to accomplish God’s good works through members of the Body of Christ, leaders of the Church must shed their control and repent of exercising power and authority in such a destructive way. They must remove the prophylatic of gender discrimination and segregation in the Church and allow the Holy Spirit to blow where it will. Read more

Do Catholic Feminists Wish to Smash the Church’s Patriarchy?

Last updated on: February 19, 2020 at 12:31 am   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

The idea of patriarchy is connected with the idea of dominion, and of orders of power. This is why patriarchal structures intersect with other power-structures such as colonialism, class structure, and systems of racial or ethnic dominance. It is connected also with theses about humanity according to which “man” has a right to wield power over the earth, to lord it over all other creatures, to take and use according to his will.  Read more

It’s Not the Divisiveness That Is the Problem

Last updated on: February 13, 2020 at 3:23 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

Dial the clock back sixty years: were we united, as a nation, at a time when Black Americans were segregated, and subjected to violence if they even tried to enter white spaces? Dial it back one hundred years. Were we united when women were not even permitted to vote? Read more

Reclaiming Our Bodies As Subjects: Women and the Objectifying Gaze

Last updated on: February 8, 2020 at 11:36 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

What if, instead of judging what a woman in the world represents to a particular gaze, we were to talk about women as subjects living in the world, humans who act, move, dance, work, fight, love, give birth, teach, create, preach, heal, rule, read, legislate, judge, sing?  Read more
