The Value and Necessity of Inter-Religious Dialogue

Last updated on: July 26, 2020 at 8:56 pm   By Guest Contributor

Religious communities, whatever else they are about, are about love, hope and faith. They are NOT about xenophobia and turf struggles – or at least they shouldn’t be, no matter how often religions have been twisted into them. Read more

It Is Clear By Now that We Are Not All In This Together

Last updated on: July 18, 2020 at 12:46 am   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

The world watches in horror as our numbers go up. And the world closes its borders to us. It is clear now that we are not in this together, that we never were. Our culture, it is clear, has been predicated from the first on questions about who are what we will be willing to sacrifice for the sake of a spurious prosperity. We lack the ability to come together and forge a social contract for the common good.  Read more

Some Considerations For Atheists In Dialogue With Christians

Last updated on: July 8, 2020 at 12:40 pm   By Guest Contributor

Do they know that God does not exist and how do they do so?  Do they mean they believe that He doesn’t because they don’t find evidence enough in the empirical?  Is atheism the same as agnosticism with simply an added dose of conviction?   Read more

What Can We Learn From Atheism?

Last updated on: July 5, 2020 at 11:14 pm   By Guest Contributor

When we begin to explore our reasons for knowledge or belief we quickly realize that our thinking and language about God (and for Christians about Jesus) is greatly reliant on “tradition” and “community.”  We are not alone in our quest, nor are atheists in theirs. We are part of a culture and so are they Read more

History May Not Repeat, But It Rhymes: Trump’s Tulsa Rally

Last updated on: June 18, 2020 at 12:22 pm   By Guest Contributor

Eventually, Trump’s search for scapegoats (“really bad people”) will backfire.  Yet the damage he has already done is incalculable.Even if he saw himself in the mirror, he has distorted it (and nature) beyond recognition. Read more

Why Are We Flying “Treason’s Flaunting Rag”? A Military Historian Considers

Last updated on: June 16, 2020 at 12:53 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

The legacy of the slaver's rebellion is one that haunts our nation to this day. The false narrative of southern hegemony has turned it into a regional divide that overlooks the truth of the matter - that 25% of the US military 1861-1865 was made up of southerners. That southern officers remained loyal in large numbers, including many members of Robert E Lee's family. It has created a false "heritage" for southerners, which in turn created continued divisiveness and perpetuated the racism that is at the roots of the slaver's rebellion. Read more

Yes, White People Need to Say Something About Racial Issues – But We Don’t Need to Say a Whole Lot

Last updated on: June 4, 2020 at 12:48 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

And finally, here’s a simple question. Can you say “Black Lives Matter”? Can you say it simply without embroidery or nuance? Can you say it without adding “All Lives Matter”? If you feel the need to say something - but can not bring yourself to say this, just this one simple truth - ask yourself, why? Read more

The Demand to Open Churches Is the Opposite of Christ-Like

Last updated on: May 25, 2020 at 11:59 am   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

Jesus taught that we ought to be willing to die for him. Yet here we see his followers - again, and again, throughout history - taking this to mean that they should be willing to kill for him. Read more

Today, I Am Ashamed of the United States

Last updated on: May 22, 2020 at 11:38 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

How can we call ourselves a “Christian nation” when, instead of standing in collective mourning for nearly one hundred thousand dead in a pandemic, we are instead gleefully clamoring because “the country is opening up!” - or whining and crying because it isn’t? Read more
