here’s what the prolife movement needs to do, if it wants to be taken seriously

Last updated on: October 6, 2016 at 10:49 am   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

The problem is, the people leading the discussion know very little about what's going on in the culture where abortion emerges as a "choice," except for in theory. Read more

the difficult and uncomfortable non-negotiables of the gospel teaching

Last updated on: October 2, 2016 at 10:18 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

Why don’t we emphasize violence – any violence, for any reason – as the primary identifying principle of the Things We Must Not Do? Perhaps because long ago we began to come up with convenient, utilitarian reasons for presuming that Jesus didn’t really mean all that tough stuff, or didn’t mean it to apply to me, in this present moment. Read more

has “pro-life” become just a brand?

Last updated on: September 28, 2016 at 1:10 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

Just as a sports fan obsessively cheers for his team even after it's traded his favorite players, even when he can't afford a ticket to the game - just as a self-professed Dodge owner repeatedly buys Dodge trucks even if they happen not to be very reliable - so, too, those who have conditioned themselves to product loyalty will buy the brand because it wears the right logo. Trump adopted the pro-life logo, plastered it on as sloppily as a sticker on the bumper of a car that nearly runs over a pregnant woman. Read more

mothering and identity politics: maybe it’s not about what I like

Last updated on: September 21, 2016 at 12:31 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

The point of being a mother is not my own identity; it's the well-being of my children. If I sit here loving being a mother, laughing over my salad, doing wholesome crafts in an impeccable home, the point of this is not the curated image of my Mothering; the point is that my children are well cared for, happy, learning, loving. And maybe they can be happy in a messy home. Read more

the exaltation of the cross should mean reaching out to the suffering

Last updated on: September 14, 2016 at 2:46 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross: how regal, how sonorous, the phrase; how solemn the image, one to which we are accustomed, since any time we walk into a church we see an elevated cross, with the image of a bleeding body on it. Wooden crosses with carved bodies, modern crosses with stylized bodies, Baroque crosses all golden splendor, Medieval crosses with the twisted body and the arcane symbolism of death and birth. We have our different tastes in artistic representation,... Read more

There Is No Such Thing As a Self-Made Man: What We Owe the Worker

Last updated on: September 6, 2017 at 1:24 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

The value of work ends up being separated from the value of the person, and treated as another commodity. Its value ceases to be connected with the dignity of the person, and is relativized to the use we can make of it, whether we need it, how much of it there is - and what we can get away with. Read more
