David Bentley Hart on Socialism: “Sane and Compassionate Governance”

Last updated on: May 21, 2019 at 12:40 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

The policies advanced by leaders such as Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, while broadly labeled “socialist” by both their proponents and opponents, are really simply the policies that work to make most developed nations happy, healthy, and functional. Read more

Mystery vs. mystery: A Note on John Gray’s Seven Types of Atheism

Last updated on: April 25, 2019 at 10:47 pm   By Guest Contributor

This is the deep difference between Gray and myself: for me, for us Christians,  the Mystery is in fact in history though it remains mysterious.  That Speaking continues in the church’s proclamation, has not withdrawn itself from history but is a dialogue rather than a monologue,  primarily in community  but as  well as in the ecstasy of a solitary mystic.  Read more

The Real “Crisis” And “Scandal” In the Church

Last updated on: April 25, 2019 at 2:17 pm   By Guest Contributor

In short, the “crisis” or “scandal” in the Roman Catholic Church (and other religious organizations and communities) is nothing more than an institution and its leaders being forced to confront its past—and present—because we, the victims, have had to deal with our pain, for ourselves and those who couldn’t.  Read more

Burning In The Cathedral – And Benedict’s Imagination

Last updated on: April 19, 2019 at 12:19 pm   By Guest Contributor

While the original look and “feel” of the Notre Dame’s spire cannot be replicated, and artworks and artifacts lost in the blaze cannot be replaced, at least most of the cathedral’s grandeur can be saved and/or restored.  The same cannot be said for the trust and faith many people had in their priests and church as long as the likes of Benedict offer up explanations for the real crisis in his church that are no more credible for than the ones the American President offers for the Trumped-up “crisis at the border.” Read more

Capital Punishment For Abortion Is Not Pro-Life

Last updated on: April 11, 2019 at 12:14 am   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

While the legislation is unlikely to pass, given extensive resistance - including from some pro-life groups - this should stand as a warning to all pro-lifers who actually care about the well-being of the women whose bodies are situated at the center of this debate. Read more

When Those Who Loved You Into the Church Are Hating You Out of It

Last updated on: April 7, 2019 at 5:43 pm   By Guest Contributor

No, the Phrase “Church Militant” Does Not Justify Militarism

Last updated on: April 5, 2019 at 9:55 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

The Gospel is clear about Jesus’ call to reject violence. We are admonished to love our enemy,to  turn the other cheek. Non-violence is essential to the hagiographies of the martyrs from the early church until today. Read more

Contrapasso in the Heartlands: When We Reject The Common Good

Last updated on: March 31, 2019 at 6:05 pm   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

Dante’s image may seem over-the-top, but when I look at the ferocity with which my fellow citizens of the United States reject a common good that would not only benefit others, but be literally life-saving for themselves, I can’t help but think I'm seeing another ring of the Inferno. Read more

It’s Not About Muslim or Christian. It’s About Extremism

Last updated on: March 25, 2019 at 12:02 am   By Rebecca Bratten Weiss

We need to get over thinking in terms of religious wars and conquest, get over thinking about the practitioners of a different faith tradition as our enemies. We can join hands across many different dividing lines, and in so doing, gain the strength and resources we all need to combat violent extremism within our own communities and faith traditions.  Read more
