Once again, I find myself steeped in embarrassment, as I explain that I am an alumna of Liberty University.
It’s not that it wasn’t a great school.
It was. I enjoyed my fellow students, as well as the professors. The education I received there was top notch.
That being said, Liberty University President Jerry Falwell, Jr is a disgrace. He has shamed the name of his father, deceased televangelist and Liberty founder, Jerry Falwell, as well as the reputation of the school.
Falwell has proven to be the very worst example of Christianity, yet, he gets lumped in with other evangelicals and called an “evangelical leader,” simply because of his name and the college he leads.
This is where I point out that Falwell is just a lawyer, not really a Christian – much less an “evangelical leader.”
Do you know who is a Christian and a true leader?
Dr. Russell Moore, a theologian and president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.
Dr. Moore has made it a habit of standing on the principles that bubble up naturally from those who take the Word of God and hold it up as a beacon to guide their steps.
He is a man of godly principle, and he is to be applauded.
Unfortunately, the same media that wants to call Jerry Falwell, Jr. a “leader” don’t seem nearly as enthusiastic about reporting on the things said by Dr. Moore.
That is, they’re not as interested, until a man of Moore’s character is attacked by the Trumpian toady, Falwell.
A man with nothing but poor character.
What makes it so bad, is that there was no beef between the two. There was no attack that should have set Falwell off.
No, Falwell, like a subservient dog, felt there was a threat to his master – Donald Trump – and he responded.
Dr. Moore, like a true and observant Christian believer, expressed dismay at the reports of deplorable conditions for immigrant children being held at the border. This was in reference to a report from the Associated Press.
In a Tuesday tweet, he stated:
“The reports of the conditions for migrant children at the border should shock all of our consciences,” Moore said in a tweet Tuesday morning. “Those created in the image of God should be treated with dignity and compassion, especially those seeking refuge from violence back home. We can do better than this.”
And of course, he’s right. We can absolutely do better.
For the “You must have voted for Hillary” crowd, to do better doesn’t mean blanket amnesty, or even automatic asylum status.
It does mean efforts should be made to address the most basic needs of these children. It doesn’t matter how they got here. It matters what happens to them while they’re in our government’s custody.
Deuteronomy 27:19 (ESV) – “‘Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Dr. Moore understands that verse. Jerry Falwell’s dad, at least, could have probably spoken at some length on the topic of kindness to strangers in our land – particularly the children – so why did his son never learn the lesson?
Because he’s got a new daddy now.
To prove that point, Falwell apparently took Moore’s comment as a direct attack on President Trump, sending him into a venomous rant.
It’s here that I have to give Donald Trump his due recognition for services rendered.
For all of his despicable ways, Donald Trump has truly been an instrument of God.
If you just did a spit take across your screen, my apologies, but allow me to explain.
Specifically, Trump has served as an amazingly effective thresher in the hand of God, separating the wheat from the chaff, as it pertains to the American church.
He has magnified the true heart of those who warm the church pews or occupy space in the pulpit on Sundays, but inwardly, revile the children of God who appear to be “other.”
Now, back to the very chaff-y Falwell, Jr.
Directly addressing Dr. Moore’s heartfelt comment, the bootlicking shill lashed out:
“Who are you @drmoore? Have you ever made a payroll?” Falwell wrote.
“Have you ever built an organization of any type from scratch?” he added. “What gives you authority to speak on any issue? I’m being serious. You’re nothing but an employee- a bureaucrat.”
I’m going to go ahead and answer that question for Falwell.
Dr. Moore is a Christian. It is our Father in Heaven Who gives him authority to speak on those things that break the heart of a holy God.
We’re not called to turn a blind eye to what is corrupt, wicked, or inhumane. We’re called to stand firm on the Word of God, to defend those who are defenseless, take up the cause of the widowed and fatherless.
And yes, attend to the sojourner as a guest, showing hospitality and kindness.
Politics has taken the place of true faith and a pure religion in this nation. Jerry Falwell, Jr is a symptom of that lukewarm fall.
Unfortunately, the world that needs to see true Christianity at work will look to Falwell and his ilk as an example of Christianity at work in this nation, rather than to someone like Dr. Moore.
The true tragedy is many souls will be lost because of it, and that is inexcusable.
