Call him the mouse that roared.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions may be at his end with being the punching bag for President Trump’s stampy-footed, impotent rage.

Every time Trump screws up, or it looks like the gears of justice are grinding just a bit closer to him, the lemur-fisted toddler lashes out like a lunatic, and more often than not, he makes Sessions the target.

Everybody has their limit.

While speaking with “Fox and Friends” host, Ainsley Earhardt, President Trump once again blamed Jeff Sessions for his Russia troubles.

I covered the latest attack earlier today. According to Trump, Sessions had failed to “take charge” of the Department of Justice, and instead, had left it to the ravages of Obama administration holdovers.

“I wanted to stay uninvolved. But when everybody sees what’s going on in the Justice Department — I always put Justice now with quotes — it’s a very, very sad day,” he said. “Jeff Sessions recused himself, which he shouldn’t have done. Or, he should have told me. Even my enemies said that, ‘Jeff Sessions should have told you that he was gonna recuse himself and then you wouldn’t have put him in.’”

Trump is stuck on the false assumption that the job of attorney general is to bend the law to protect the president. He thought Sessions, who had been such a loyal and slavish toady on the campaign trail, would continue to lick his boots to a high shine, once in the position.

The president stopped just short of saying he was prepared to fire Sessions, or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who took over and appointed special counsel Robert Mueller, after Sessions recused himself.

After Trump’s ranty interview hit the airwaves, Sessions struck back today in a released statement.

“I took control of the Department of Justice the day I was sworn in, which is why we have had unprecedented success at effectuating the president’s agenda – one that protects the safety and security and rights of the American people, reduces violent crime, enforces our immigration laws, promotes economic growth, and advances religious liberty,” Sessions said in a written statement.

I took control…

Yeah. That was a direct clap back.

“While I am attorney general, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations,” Sessions said. “I demand the highest standards, and where they are not met, I take action.  However, no nation has a more talented, more dedicated group of law enforcement investigators and prosecutors than the United States.

“I am proud to serve with them and proud of the work we have done in successfully advancing the rule of law,” he said.

In the early days of the ongoing Russia probe, when Trump realized that Sessions was not another Michael Cohen, or anyone who was going to run interference on his behalf and began his raw attacks, Sessions offered to resign. Trump, however, asked him to stay.

I’m wondering if the intensity of the investigation will push Trump to the point of firing Sessions, or if he feels the former senator is better kept under his thumb.

Either way, there doesn’t seem to be any relief from the wuthering pressure of Robert Mueller’s investigation for Trump, so Sessions can plan on continued attacks. He’ll have to make the decision as to if he stays and endures, or if he throws his hands up and walks away.

Question: If he walks away, how soon before Mueller calls him to be a part of the ongoing probe, and how valuable could his contributions to that end be?
