It’s unbelievable that someone with the kind of deep-rooted insecurities and pathological tendencies exhibited by Donald Trump is allowed to serve in the highest seat in the land.
I truly believe that looking in the rearview mirror of time, we will realize just how clear the signs were that this is not a well man, and we ignored those signs.
And yes, I’m writing this under the assumption that there will be a future where we’re still allowed to talk about the most horrid mistakes of our past.
Donald Trump’s need to be seen as the biggest and the best, even as facts, statistics, and everything based in reality says otherwise causes him to spew utter nonsense on a regular basis.
On Thursday, an interview with a U.K. newspaper quoted Trump’s latest boast of his high popularity with the Republican party.
“You know, a poll just came out that I am the most popular person in the history of the Republican Party,” Trump said in an interview with The Sun published on Thursday.
“Beating Lincoln,” Trump said. “I beat our Honest Abe.”
Not just the most popular president, but the most popular person in Republican party history.
What is he talking about? What poll?
Thank you to all of my great supporters, really big progress being made. Other countries wanting to fix crazy trade deals. Economy is ROARING. Supreme Court pick getting GREAT REVIEWS. New Poll says Trump, at over 90%, is the most popular Republican in history of the Party. Wow!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 10, 2018
Nobody knows. Literally.
First of all, there were no presidential approval polls during the days of the Lincoln presidency, although, I’d be willing to bet, given the turmoil in the nation at that time, he may have had his struggles with popularity.
Maybe, as is often the case with Trump, confused by other numbers he heard?
According to a recent Gallup poll, 90 percent of Republicans approved of Trump in June. The New York Times noted that would make Trump more popular with his party at this point in his first term than any other modern president except former President George W. Bush shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks.
It’s that “except for” that Trump would be overlooking, if this is the poll he’s thinking of.
And that “except for” means he’s not the most popular president in party history, at least not at this point of his presidency.
A January 2018 poll reported at FiveThirtyEight gave the approval ratings after a year of every president since 1945. Trump’s popularity rating was the only one that was in the negative numbers (-15 net approval).
Gallup currently has Trump at 56 percent disapproval, 41 percent approval.
The latest Rasmussen poll has him at 52 percent disapproval, and 46 percent approval.
He has failed to get to and maintain popularity at or over 50 percent for his entire presidency, to date. The only logical explanation for his dubious claims of popularity are that he’s incapable of telling the truth, and he feels like there’s something out there that would stop citizens in the U.K. from checking it out for themselves.
I mean, it’s going to be lit when the U.K. discovers the internet!
“But the people of the U.K., and I’ll bet if you had an honest poll, I’d be very strong. They want the same thing I want. I love the U.K.,” Trump told The Sun.
Please. If there is anyone from the U.K. reading this, find a way to poll the people of the U.K. about their views of Trump and publish those findings.
I would suspect that the protests in London are one clue as to how those polls would look.
Speaking of those protests, Trump is pouting.
“I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London,” Trump said. “I used to love London as a city. I haven’t been there in a long time. But when they make you feel unwelcome, why would I stay there?”
He’s talking about the giant “Baby Trump” balloon protestors plan to fly during his visit.
Trump doesn’t respond well to even the most minor criticisms, so it’s no wonder he’s upset. He needs to be idolized, hence the reason he’s built himself up as the most popular Republican president in history, when he so clearly is not.
