Things Learned Between WY and CA (and Relearned Between CA and WY)

Last updated on: January 16, 2015 at 2:07 pm   By Joseph Susanka

Thing One: That’s a radiator cap. Everyone (or every car) should have one. For a brief moment on that fantastic 80MPH stretch between Salt Lake City and St. George, we did not have one. Or at least we did not have one attached to our radiator in quite the way one might wish. As a result, there was a 15-minute stretch of our journey when we also had no coolant. Somewhat miraculously, the cap remained partially connected, perched at a... Read more

Back in the Saddle

Last updated on: March 17, 2017 at 3:08 pm   By Joseph Susanka

We’re back. Yes, I’m sure. I looked out of my window this morning, and saw that it was 12°. Wait…What? I have a feeling we’re not in California any more, Toto. Posting will resume as soon as I recover from my vacation. IF I recover from my vacation. (Thanks to ShutterStock for that not-quite-wintry-enough image, necessitated by the fact that my camera is buried somewhere under the mountain of “supplies” we pulled out of the van last night.) Read more

Away Message

Last updated on: March 17, 2017 at 3:08 pm   By Joseph Susanka

Dear Reader(s), I will be away from My Crazy Wyoming Life for a few days to attend a wedding in SoCal. As a result, blogging will probably be sparse. Or silly. (So, pretty much business as usual here at STST, right?) Please hold your applause. And pray for my sons, who will be spending the next few days trapped in a van with your truly. (Thanks, Shutterstock. Now I now what the next 18+ hours will look like. “Yay.”) Read more

Clash of the Cultural Titans

Last updated on: March 17, 2017 at 3:08 pm   By Joseph Susanka

According to Immanuel Kant, “in everything that is to excite a lively convulsive laugh, there must be something absurd.” This video, which I stumbled across during a desperate Monday, just might be the definitive example of his theory. It certainly excited a lively laugh in me. And convulsions. (And it’s most definitely absurd. Hugely, wonderfully absurd.) There’s something so incongruous about that voice (and the particular personality and memories I associate with that character) saying those so-familiar words — Can... Read more

Cyan’s Back!

Last updated on: January 16, 2015 at 1:08 pm   By Joseph Susanka

I don’t have a lot of  teenage memories. In fact, as I’ve surely remarked/lamented before, I don’t have a lot of memories from any stage in my life. But of the few I do have, some of the fondest are the laughter-filled hours my siblings and I spent gathered around the computer playing adventure games. I’m not quite sure how we managed to transform single-player games into such a group activity, but we did. “The Gaming Hour” became a bit... Read more

Walking with “Aguirre”

Last updated on: March 17, 2017 at 3:08 pm   By Joseph Susanka

I love long takes. I love collecting them; cataloging them; comparing-and-contrasting them. I love watching and re-watching my own personal favorites, and I’m always scanning the InterWebs in an endless quest for newer, even more bravura examples. In fact, it might well be my second-favorite cinematic hobby of all time, right after collecting, cataloging, comparing, and contrasting film scores. (And no, I’m not quite sure if more accurate to call them hobbies or obsessions. That’s for you to know. And for... Read more

The Messengers of Mozart’s Music

Last updated on: March 17, 2017 at 3:08 pm   By Joseph Susanka

Earlier this year, the violin and viola that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself used in his own concerts traveled to to the United States for the first time, giving performers and listeners everywhere goosebumps. NPR’s Anastasia Tsioulcas filed a report in which she discusses touching the instrument for the first time: I could feel my heart stop. My fingers were trembling. And I’m pretty sure I had a huge smile on my face as I tucked the violin under my chin. The... Read more

Orson’s Shylock

Last updated on: January 30, 2015 at 3:34 pm   By Joseph Susanka

A few weeks ago, I accidentally stumbled across the following clips. I don’t remember what I was searching for at the time — definitely not “Orson Welles’ Shylock Monologues,” since I didn’t even realize they existed prior to my unknowing-yet-grateful stumblings — but their presence on YouTube reminds me of why I love the Internet so dearly (despite its many and manifest flaws). I’ve always been fascinated by that Shylock monologue. And I find Orson Welles one of the most mesmerizing, most... Read more

“Jiro Dreams of Sushi”

Last updated on: March 17, 2017 at 3:08 pm   By Joseph Susanka

Last week, Sean and I finally sat down together and watched something I’ve been trying to get to for the last few months: Jiro Dreams of Sushi. I realize that this post this being written quite a bit after the rest of the world gave Jiro their attention, but I actually consider it borderline miraculous that I got to it at all. My Netflix queue…er…I mean my “My List” is a confusing, terrifying place. In fact, if not for Sean’s interest and insistence, I’d still... Read more

Amazing Animal Congregations

Last updated on: March 17, 2017 at 3:08 pm   By Joseph Susanka

I love large groups of animals. Mostly (I like to tell myself), it’s because I’m fascinated by the often stark differences between “Crowd” and “Individual” behaviors. But I suspect it’s at least partially because I feel like I’m surrounded by my own little Large Group of Animals each and every day. (And yes, there is a dramatic differences between my sons’ isolated and crowd behaviors. We’re workin’ on that.) This MyModernMetropolis post (found via LaughingSquid) is called “12 Amazing Photos of... Read more
