So It Begins
Last updated on: March 17, 2017 at 3:05 pm By Joseph Susanka
After many years, countless recommendations and conversations, and almost as many attempts to find a sticking point for the requisite courage, I am finally addressing one of my most glaring pop-cultural blind spots: Last night, I watched the first episode of the first season of “Breaking Bad.” Yes, I know it’s only the beginning. But yes, I am proud of myself. My only thoughts so far? What an odd (and fascinating) tone. That, in and of itself, would probably bring me... Read more

SSF: “Writers’ Block”
Last updated on: January 14, 2015 at 5:14 pm By Joseph Susanka
Some good, quirky fun. Sort of a Stranger Than Fiction vibe going on, right? Which is always worth feelin’. The animation’s deceptively simple, and subtler than it looks on the surface. I particularly love the way the stripes on the prisoners’ uniforms don’t move. I’m going to assume that’s a “Monkey Island” reference, because this is my blog and I can do what I want. Also, nice Kind Hearts and Coronets reference at the end, there. (Not actually intended, you say? See previous sentiment.)... Read more

SVS: “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”
Last updated on: January 9, 2015 at 5:00 pm By Joseph Susanka
When The Diving Bell and the Butterfly first flitted over the turbid waters of my cinematic consciousness some years ago, I didn’t give it much thought. To be perfectly honest, my initial reactions were almost entirely incidental. The first, a mild curiosity over the fact that its director shared a surname with the famous pianist and composer, Artur Schnabel. And the second, an amusement at the juxtaposition of two such disparate objects in the film’s title itself. A diving bell, huge... Read more

Life Got You Down Lately? Here’s A Visual Antidote.
Last updated on: March 17, 2017 at 3:06 pm By Joseph Susanka
Maybe it’s not life that’s tripping you up. Maybe it’s just Thursdays. Either way, try this. Step One: Go to Google Image Search. Step Two: Search for “harry finder silhouettes.” Step Three: You’re welcome. If you’re not comfortable with Google Image Search — and there are reasons to avoid it, I know — you can just go here. And stare. In amazement. Until you feel better. For particularly tough doldrums? Save, Right-Click, and “Set as desktop background.” Looking for a... Read more

Definitely Not in Kansas Any More
Last updated on: January 18, 2015 at 3:47 pm By Joseph Susanka
Last night, Son Number One — the newly-teen-aged-one (O.M.G!!!) — had his first baseball game of the season. Because we’re talking about Dominic here and he lives/breaths/dreams baseball for a couple of months before the season actually starts, it couldn’t have come a moment too soon. He was about to explode. Also, by the time the game ended, it was 42°. Because Wyoming. The team took it about as much in stride as one could have hoped, and even seemed to be... Read more

“Stranger Than Fiction’s” Sensational Title Sequence
Last updated on: July 17, 2015 at 11:26 am By Joseph Susanka
As I have doubtless mentioned in the past, title sequences are one of my (frighteningly numerous) obsessions. So I’m sure it will come as no surprise to my “readers” that a glancing Stranger Than Fiction encounter as I researched an upcoming Summa Short resulted in my viewing this video somewhere between 4 and 379 times. …somewhere…yeah. Aside from being both funny and clever and visually inventive, it’s also an outstanding introduction to the film. Gives us a significant amount of key information in an... Read more

SSF: “Omelette”
Last updated on: January 14, 2015 at 4:48 pm By Joseph Susanka
Having spent a significant part of yesterday (and nearly every other Sunday) morning making Sausage-and-Cheese omelettes for the hollow-legged little hooligans known as The Boys, this short really hit home: Love the facial expressions in this one, which comes from Madeline Sharafian, a student at the legendary animation factory, CalArts. It was her 2nd Year film, which she completed last April. So, yeah. She’s a college student. And already making things like that. I …can’t really get my head around... Read more

I’m On the Radio Today! …Run For Your Lives!
Last updated on: January 6, 2015 at 5:28 pm By Joseph Susanka
Having a face made for radio’s bad enough. But since I’ve got a Lina Lamont-pitched speaking voice to go along with it, there really aren’t a whole lot of mediums left. (Hence, a blog.) Still, despite what I just said, I’m on the radio this weekend, courtesy of the great generosity (and, perhaps, suspect prudence) of Deal Hudson and his “Church and Culture” show on Ave Maria Radio. The program’s two hours long, running from 2:00PM to 4:00PM EDT this afternoon... Read more

SVS: “Lilies of the Field”
Last updated on: January 9, 2015 at 4:49 pm By Joseph Susanka
I’m still Easter-ing, because it’s still Easter. So I wanted to come up with an Easter-y film for recommending this Easter Friday. (Also, yes. I’m done turning “Easter” into less liturgically appropriate parts of speech. Stickler.) There aren’t actually that many, come to think of it. Especially if you exclude things like Hop and Yogi the Easter Bear — which…UghPleaseDon’tEven. So, after considering a few films only-tangentially-connected-to/in-the-same-general-time-frame-and-locale as the feast in question — The Robe is available, for example, as is Ben... Read more

“The Definitive Oral History of a TV Masterpiece”
Last updated on: March 17, 2017 at 3:06 pm By Joseph Susanka
Ever since I was first introduced to the one-of-a-kind “Mystery Science Theater 3000” in college — by my future wife, no less — I’ve been a proud MySTie. (I didn’t realize there was an official, universally-recognized term for my particular brand of insanity until today. I’m pleased.) Talk about a show that was destined for my wheelhouse. First, of course, because movies — sort of. And because super-super sarcastic, which is ever how I roll. And, perhaps most of all, because I’m... Read more
