On Calumny, Immigrants, and J. D. Vance

Calumny is a mortal sin. Calumny is a serious sin against the fifth commandment. For my Protestant readers: Catholics break up Deuteronomy 5:6-21 into different chunks than you do, so our first commandment combines the rule against false gods and graven images into one commandment, and we break up the commandment against coveting your neighbor’s ox and coveting your neighbor’s wife into two separate ones. That means, by our numbering, the fifth commandment is your sixth, “thou shalt... Read more

On Faith, Hope, and Watermelons

I think of myself as an accomplished gardener, but I have never yet successfully grown a watermelon. A freshly picked, vine-ripened, organic watermelon is a treat so sublime I can’t possibly describe it. It’s nothing like the flavorless ovoids you get at the supermarket. Have you ever wondered why cartoon paintings of watermelons are red and green, instead of pink and green? It’s because, when you let a watermelon get totally ripe on the vine, the flesh inside is... Read more

Who Will Christ Acknowledge Before the Father?

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew: Jesus said to the Twelve: “Fear no one. Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops. And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and... Read more

As Life goes On, and Changes

Adrienne and I have such good times together. When I finally gave up on homeschooling, a year or two too late if I am honest, and sent Adrienne to middle school, it felt like the end of the world.  When we put away that ridiculous dollhouse for the last time, it felt as if my life was over. I really did feel that I was going to die, or as if I was supposed to die because I’d used up... Read more

On Drugs, Homiletics, and an Urban Legend

Last updated on: June 17, 2026 at 12:17 pm   By Mary Pezzulo

I heard a homily the other day, that I’ve been puzzling about ever since. The priest in question wanted to illustrate God’s compassion and forgiveness. To do this, he told us a story of “a family I know on the East Coast, but I won’t say any names to protect their privacy.” He acted as though these were people he’d really met. He explained that the mother was a devout Catholic, but the son had fallen away from the faith... Read more

When I Learned to Forgive Myself

Adrienne’s new passion is lifting weights, which means that now I lift weights. Adrienne is still a bit too young to be able to go to the community center’s weight room alone, so I come along. I suppose I could just supervise, but it seemed like the waste of a day pass. I started using the machines myself, just a little before Easter, and we’ve been going twice a week ever since. I don’t exactly like lifting weights, but I... Read more

On Mormons, the Pentagon, and the First Amendment

Last updated on: June 11, 2026 at 3:47 pm   By Mary Pezzulo

The discourse this week was about whether Mormons are Christian, but it ought to have been about something else. It seems that the Pentagon has decided to streamline the list of codes they use to track the religious faiths of men and women in the armed forces, so that they can provide chaplains and other accommodations to people of different faiths. The list used to be about 200 religions long, and now it only has thirty-one religions, twenty-one of which... Read more

On Disability, Down Syndrome, and Abortion

Last updated on: June 10, 2026 at 9:58 pm   By Mary Pezzulo

I’m going to lift my moratorium on talking about abortion, for just a minute, because this is about more than abortion. You probably already know that I reported quite a bit on the pro-life movement during the first Trump term. I quite accidentally became big-fish-in-a-small-pond famous for reporting on the horrific behavior of Frank Pavone, Abby Johnson, and others. I am a Catholic. I want to safeguard life. If you wanted me to help you get an abortion, I’d say... Read more

Charlie and the Whistle Pig

Charlie the cat is determined to protect the garden. Gardening, as you know, is my therapy. It makes my life worth living. I am nothing without the backyard vegetable patch. Every year, as soon as the world thaws out in March, I am outside in the backyard shoveling compost and guinea pig manure over the soil to get the garden ready. Every spring, I hoard seeds and grow seedlings in the window. Every summer I squeeze more food out of... Read more

Hi friends, This isn’t a real post. It’s just my every-several-months boilerplate where I post my tip jar and talk about where to find me when I’m not here. For those of you who are new: hello! I’m Mary. I’m a mom and an author from Steubenville, Ohio. Here on Patheos, I write about my life as a Catholic in Northern Appalachia, focusing mostly on issues like poverty, social justice, and recovery from spiritual abuse. I also write about... Read more
