A Guinea Pig in Rivendell

Last updated on: September 23, 2026 at 11:34 pm   By Mary Pezzulo

We buried the guinea pig on Thursday night. Adrienne had dug the grave the day before, a little ways off from that ridiculous rose bush I bought on a whim when I first began to like my life. Lady Mcfluff liked to graze on the weeds near the rose bush. Once, when I was pulling weeds, she got out of her enclosure and scooted in that direction. I found her hiding in the shade of the rose’s leaves, with the... Read more

On Misogyny, Aslan, and a Moral Panic

Last updated on: September 20, 2026 at 5:32 pm   By Mary Pezzulo

I will start by saying that the upcoming Greta Gerwig-directed version of The Magician’s Nephew looks awful. You may be asking, “how can you say that when the movie hasn’t been released yet and you’ve only seen a few stills?” and you are correct. I’m embarrassed that I’m even having this conversation. But a few colorful stills from the upcoming 2027 film have been released to the public, along with some statements from Gerwig about how she admires David Bowie... Read more

To Glorify Your Name

Last updated on: September 18, 2026 at 5:04 pm   By Mary Pezzulo

What’s your name? No, really. Not the thing on the birth certificate, but the thing that you are. What is your name? Personally, I’ve had a whole lot of names. When I was very young, my aunts called me “the Little Princess.” This is one of those things they think I don’t remember because I was so small when it happened. My mother was a new mom, desperately trying to make up for her own abusive childhood by being extra attentive... Read more

In the World that is Passing Away

The guinea pig started to die, a day or two ago. Lady Mcfluff came into the house in 2021, as a tenth birthday present for my Adrienne.  Adrienne will turn fifteen next Tuesday. That means the guinea pig is now something over five years old, geriatric for a cavy. Any time you get with a guinea pig over the age of four is a blessing. This summer she’s been picking at her food instead of eating it with gusto.... Read more

In the Time Between “Now” and “History”

Last updated on: September 11, 2026 at 6:12 pm   By Mary Pezzulo

I couldn’t tell you the exact moment at which current events become history. I know that the period between “now” and “history” is a little less than twenty years, because it was in late summer of 2020 that I noticed the footage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks looked old. For a long time, every time I re-watched the videos of all the news coverage, that footage looked like it was taking place in the present day, and then one... Read more

I’ll Never Forget What Americans Did, for Money

The neighbors up the block took down their TRUMP flag. Besides the flag, their house was a pretty house, with a nice garden in the back and wind chimes on the porch. They’re the kind of people who not only decorate for Christmas and Halloween, but also for minor holidays, so there’s always something to see. Right in the middle of the front yard was a great big flag pole. On the flag pole was your standard red and... Read more

I’m Not Sorry for Milo Yiannopoulos. But this is Wrong

Last updated on: September 2, 2026 at 11:30 pm   By Mary Pezzulo

Yes, I’ve heard about Milo Yiannopoulos. I heard about him Friday. I had been at a pristine hike at the Wildflower Reserve, where there were beautiful birds to listen to and crunchy acorns to step on and a glorious noisy river. When  I got back to the car I saw his name in a headline, and seriously considered running back into the woods to never be seen again. I do not like the man. But when I got home,... Read more

A Complicated Joy

If you don’t find Christ among the pots and pans, you’ll never find Him anywhere else. If you don’t find Christ right where you are, in the people you meet and the places you go and the chores you do in your day-to-day life, Christ will be invisible to you forever. I don’t know if I should come out and brag that I’ve found Christ, but I’ve certainly found tomatoes. I have found so many tomatoes it’s turning into... Read more

Dolly Parton Was a Saint. She Lived the Gospel

Last updated on: August 31, 2026 at 12:53 pm   By Mary Pezzulo

On Dolly Parton, Faith, and Works I didn’t know very much about Dolly Parton. There are some celebrities I know a ridiculous amount about and almost feel like they’re part of my family, and others who fall into the category of “seems like a nice person.” Dolly was the latter, to me. From what little I knew of her music, I liked it. I heard she ran a charity that gave away books and that she was extremely personable. But... Read more

A Place Where Anything Can Happen

“Did you hear several kids from LaBelle got into a bad accident?” said Jimmy. I was driving him to his mother’s place on Sunday morning. He is replacing the transmission in a car there, so his family can have transportation again, and until it’s all done I’m happy to lend him Sacre Bleu. But Sunday I had to get to Mass and run errands afterwards, so I was dropping him off and going to keep the car myself. I... Read more
