I Thought Everyone Wanted to be Right. I Was Wrong
Last updated on: January 8, 2026 at 3:23 pm By Mary Pezzulo
I wonder what it would take, to convince people that they’re in the wrong. I have been thinking about this for so many years now, and I haven’t come up with an answer. What would it take to convince people they’re in the wrong? That enough is enough, and it’s okay to come out and admit they made a mistake? What would it take to convince people that, if they’re cheering on masked thugs who murder citizens, torture clergy, and... Read more

On the Murder of Renee Nicole Good
Last updated on: January 7, 2026 at 9:38 pm By Mary Pezzulo
I watched another murder today. I was scrolling on my social media, when I saw the video from Minneapolis: a black SUV that looks rather like my neighbor’s old Dodge, turning sharply to drive away from ICE agents on a snow-covered street. You could tell they were ICE agents by the mask. One of them tried to get in front of the car, after the driver turned. Then he aimed his gun at her side window, and shot her... Read more

There comes a point at which, if you really don’t know that something is wrong, I can’t convince you. If you see nothing wrong with the current situation the United States has gotten itself into, I can’t just quote you a syllogism that will make you understand. If you don’t know why it’s a bad idea for one country to rush into a different country and kidnap their leader for a show trial because they decided they’d like to–... Read more

Like a Child in a Library
Last updated on: January 1, 2026 at 11:15 pm By Mary Pezzulo
I took Jimmy’s boy to the library. I hadn’t planned to take him to the library that particular day. But we’d finished touring the city’s Christmas display and it was time for me to run errands, and Jimmy’s boy didn’t want to go home yet. He wanted to sit in the car and eat the candy he’d bought. I said that he could ride along for my errands with Adrienne and me, as long as he promised to brush... Read more

Magnificat in Snow
Last updated on: December 31, 2025 at 9:44 pm By Mary Pezzulo
As the year drew to a close, I found myself with a bit of writer’s block. Christmas came, and it was a good Christmas. Some of the Christmases I’ve had have been nightmares, but this one was fun and lighthearted. I sat down to write several times, but several times felt like I had nothing to say. A few days after Christmas, I went to the calling hours for the nicest lady I’ve ever met, and knelt beside the... Read more

I really have been trying to keep my mind off politics and on Christmas this week, but it wasn’t to be. I’ve been trying to take a few days off from worrying about the political situation in the United States and just wish Jesus a happy birthday. But I don’t get to have nice things. This afternoon I got online to write about something liturgical and pretty, which I’m still working on in a tab. But I have to take... Read more

The Nicest Lady I’ve Ever Met
Last updated on: December 23, 2025 at 12:00 am By Mary Pezzulo
A friend died today. I hadn’t had much contact with Suzanne Lewis, who used to write beautiful things on Patheos, in the past several years, because we were in different social circles and lost touch. I knew she was ill, but didn’t know how bad it had gotten. Apparently her cancer took a turn for the worse back in January, and now she is gone. I can’t begin to think of all the interesting things to tell you about... Read more

Blogkeeping Notes for Winter 2026
Last updated on: December 21, 2025 at 3:05 pm By Mary Pezzulo
Hi friends! This is not a normal post. This is just my every-couple-of-months boilerplate where I tell you where to find me when I’m not here and how to support my work. I’ll have a writing or recording worth your time up later today. The fall is finally over here in Steubenville! In the past few months, as you’ve read here on Patheos, I went back to my work teaching art and geography at the church outreach and I’ve... Read more

To Believe in the Incarnation
Last updated on: December 21, 2025 at 12:10 am By Mary Pezzulo
I took Jimmy’s boy to the Nutcracker Village, as a Christmas treat. We stopped at the coffee shop, where Adrienne got a nice grown-up latte and Jimmy’s boy got hot chocolate and marshmallows. Then, of course, we had to rummage through the candy in the treat shop next door. Jimmy’s boy walked out with a stash of gum and lollipops that made my teeth ache just looking at it. We found the perfect Christmas ornament for a present for... Read more

An Empty Chapel, A Human Church, A Patient God
Last updated on: December 19, 2025 at 7:24 pm By Mary Pezzulo
I went back to the chapel at the old hospital, to ask for mercy. Sometimes I think I’m the only one who prays in that chapel. I’m not, but it must be very sparsely visited. Most days when I sneak in to pray, I find the old Bible that’s set in a corner still open to whatever passage I was reading the last time I was there. Sometimes I find a little bouquet of wildflowers that was left there weeks... Read more
