Today, the darling of the pro-life movement, TV’s Donald J. Trump, just brought us one big step closer to nuclear war.

It has just been reported that the president promised retaliation against North Korea in the most shocking terms imaginable today, and I’ll let the New York Times give you the details:

“North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States,” Mr. Trump told reporters at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J. “They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. He has been very threatening beyond a normal state and as I said they will be met with fire and fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before.”

And, as Reuters is reporting,

Earlier Pyongyang said it was ready to give Washington a “severe lesson” with its strategic nuclear force in response to any U.S. military action.

Washington has warned it is ready to use force if need be to stop North Korea’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs but that it prefers global diplomatic action, including sanctions.

The consequences of any U.S. strike would potentially be catastrophic not only for North Koreans but also South Korea, Japan and the thousands of U.S. military personnel within range of any North Korean retaliatory strikes.

He just threatened a strike, to punish North Korea for making threats. He threatened nuclear war, two days after the anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing and the day before the anniversary of the Nagasaki bombing. No, he didn’t say “nuclear.” I don’t think he can pronounce the word. But our president threatened some kind of fiery military strike unprecedented in world history on a power that will unquestionably respond to it with nukes. And how do you think the president is going to respond to a nuclear attack? He’s been drooling at the prospect of nuclear weapons since December.

During a potential crisis which could cost the lives of millions, one would wish for a cool-headed leader at the reins, and who do we have? An ignorant, bellicose spoiled brat.

The men, the women, the children and, yes, the unborn babies in North Korea, South Korea and Japan, not to mention the United States military personnel within range, are that much closer to being vaporized, because of an ignorant, bellicose, spoiled brat.

And how did we end up with this spoiled brat?

I seem to recall a certain Catholic blogger, with a name like Pazuzu or something, from Northern Appalachia or thereabouts, who tried to warn people that this would happen– that maybe, just maybe, there’s more to Catholic Social Teaching than bullying all your friends into voting Republican straight down ticket no matter whom they run. That maybe a respect for life demands standing up for all human beings instead of exclusively the unborn– that maybe standing up for the unborn means more than voting for the party that claims to want to help them but never amounts to much, and does massive damage to human life at other stages.  That it could just be that being truly pro-life means listening to the Pope, condemning war, working to serve the poor, caring for the environment, and not dancing attendance on slimy businessmen who claim they have the best interests of American Christians at heart but do nothing to defend life. As a matter of fact, quite a few of us tried everything we could to convince you that electing Trump was the worst possible way to defend life.

But too many American Catholics didn’t listen. They decided to take the advice of a rebellious priest who’s been denounced by multiple bishops and who desecrated an altar with a thirty-year-old infant corpse he has denied proper burial; a priest who about two days ago posted a video of himself fantasizing about everyone who disapproves of Trump vanishing from the United States altogether-– that line is at about the three-minute mark, by the way. Father Pro-Life wants about 54% of the United States wiped out.
And here we are.

There is a solid chance that a Republican, “pro-life” president will go down in history as the one whose stupidity under pressure caused a full-blown nuclear war.

We had all better pray to God the president is as bad at starting a war as he is at healthcare reform. It would be horrible for him to find his strong suit now.
