Spend 10 to 20 minutes on this meditation adapted from The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Imagine an earthly ruler who is good and capable, working for the good of all, yet exercising justice.

Spend some time thinking about what this ruler would be like.

Then imagine that this ruler calls on you to come and work for him or her. What kinds of missions might this king or president or prime minister send you on? Imagine the president saying to you, “I have a special mission for you. I want you to work directly by my side–to eat as I eat, drink as I drink, dress as I dress. When I work I want you working, even long into the night, as the work might require. When we have success you will share with me in it because you have put in the hard work.”

Next imagine that this president is Christ. What would it mean to serve Christ as a president who has called on you specifically to play a special role in his administration?

As you go into Independence Day celebrations, keep this sense of Christ’s kingship with you. Christ has called you to be a special part of his kingdom and wants to give you a job in his administration. You just have to be ready for the specific mission whenever it might come.
