Sibling Rivalry
Ah, the joys of sibling rivalry. Sibling rivalry has been around since the beginning of time. In the Bible, Cain killed his brother Abel in a clear-cut case of sibling rivalry. Even Jacob and Esau got into the act by Jacob offering Esau a bowl of stew in exchange for his birthright. Clearly, sibling rivalry has been ongoing and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
As Christians or people of faith, as some prefer to go by, we’re called to seek out divine harmony in our lives. This includes the various challenges posed by sibling rivalry. Let’s explore how faith can guide us through the tumultuous waters of sibling rivalry and how we can find greater peace, love, harmony, and unity within our families of origin.
Recognizing the Divine Plan
Most people believe God has a special and unique plan for everyone on this earth. This also extends to our siblings, even if we’re not getting along. When we look at it like this, we realize that each person in our family has a purpose and a reason for their very existence.
When we examine it like this, we can then see that God has an intricate plan within each family unit. We can appreciate our siblings’ differences and talents by embracing this perspective. Thus, we can see them as a support network, not a competitive perspective.
Still, seeing our siblings as a support network is challenging at best. Many times, siblings are at odds from day one. Very few siblings have a close bond. For those with a close bond, it has to be mutual to both parties for it to work.
Practicing Forgiveness
Forgiveness. Often, it’s easier said than done. However, in any relationship, forgiveness is a cornerstone. When sibling rivalry results in grudges, hurt feelings, or even estrangement, it’s important to remember the value of forgiveness.
Imagine the sibling rivalry in biblical times when Jacob wanted to marry Rachael and thought that was who he had married, only to discover, after fulfilling his desires during the wedding night, that he had been married to Leah. Rachael must have been so distraught. Perhaps Leah felt superior now that she had been married to the man who wanted her younger sister. From that point forward, the sisters were rivals, even if they hadn’t been before.
God compensated Leah with many children while her sister, the object of Jacob’s affection, was left barren until much later in life. According to their father, the reason was that it was customary for the oldest daughter to marry before the younger daughter. It would have been a huge undertaking for Rachael to forgive her sister as well as her father for the situation.
Seeking Guidance through Prayer
Perhaps one of the most powerful tools for seeking divine harmony in our relationships with our siblings is prayer. Prayer can be done anywhere at any time. It can be done in public, in private, or in groups. It’s a powerful tool.
When we pray, we can ask God for patience, understanding, and strength to overcome our conflicts. We can also pray for our siblings, parents, and anyone else we need to pray for. While it’s easy to pray, “Dear God, Please help my sibling see things my way.” Praying that God grants you wisdom and grace to deal with a situation is far healthier.
By shifting the focus of our perceived rivalry and praying instead for one another, we often grow and find much more fulfillment in our lives. It also moves the focus from the rivalry to that of genuine concern for one another.
Modeling Christ-like Love
As Christians, Jesus serves as the ultimate example of love and selflessness. By applying the principles of Christ-like love to our siblings, we can transform the situation. Utilizing the love of Christ can literally transform the love with our siblings.
By caring about the well-being of our siblings, Just as God has commanded us to “love one another,” we are to love our siblings. Loving one another means putting their needs before our needs. INSERT JOHN 3:23 HERE
When we genuinely care for the well-being of our siblings and serve them with love and humility, we pave the way for divine harmony within our family.
Communication and Conflict Resolution
It’s important to develop healthy communication in our relationships. We are taught in Sunday School to be truthful and loving and to listen with an open heart. Whenever conflicts arise, we are commanded in the Bible to approach the situation with humility and a willingness to resolve the issue.
This can mean talking it out and coming to a compromise even if we don’t want to. It’s not always going to be easy. The Bible makes that very clear. Imagine how Rachael and Leah got along after Jacob was tricked into marrying Leah and not Rachael. Rachael must have been hurt deeply.
Yet, we read on and find that God compensated Leah by blessing her with many children while her jealous sister remained barren. That must have been really painful emotionally for Rachael. Maintaining harmony in the relationship must have taken quite a bit of self-control for the sisters.
Take Away
Finding peace and harmony in the midst of sibling rivalry can be a very challenging journey. Our faith has given us valuable tools to help us along the way. By recognizing the divine plan, practicing forgiveness, seeking guidance through prayer, modeling Christ-like love, and embracing healthy communication, we can transform sibling rivalry into an opportunity for growth, love, and spiritual enrichment. In doing so, we fulfill the higher purpose of our faith – to bring peace, love, and unity into our families and our lives.
