Happy Independence Day! It\u2019s that time when we celebrate our freedoms while cooking meat, blowing things up, and conveniently ignoring the erosion of the very liberties we\u2019re celebrating. So between the hotdogs and fireworks, let\u2019s explore if we\u2019re as <\/span>free<\/span> as our forefathers intended\u2026 or living in blissful ignorance.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Brief History Lesson<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Remember <\/span>back<\/span> in history <\/span>class?<\/span> When we all learned that the founding fathers risked everything to declare independence from British tyranny? They gave us the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and seemingly endless bumper sticker quotes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fast forward to now, and I\u2019m left wondering if those sacrifices were in vain and freedom a relic of the past.\u00a0<\/span>Think I\u2019m wrong? Let\u2019s look down a list for fun:<\/span><\/p>\n

A Surveillance Nation<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Our civil liberties are on life support. Mass surveillance has become the norm. Big Brother watches our every move. Sure, we\u2019ve still got the right to protest, but only if you\u2019re okay with being pepper-sprayed, tasered, and\/or hauled off to jail. It <\/span>really<\/span> doesn\u2019t seem much of an upgrade to tar and feathering. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Voting Games<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Voting is supposed to be the cornerstone of democracy, right?<\/span> Except it\u2019s not as simple as showing up and casting a ballot. Gerrymandering ensures that politicians pick their voters and not the other way around. Then we\u2019ve got voter ID laws, polling place closures, and purges of voter rolls. Those are just a few of the tricks used to suppress the vote. And don\u2019t even get me started on the Electoral College.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rich Get Richer<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

You\u2019re free to pursue the American Dream \u2013 if you can afford it. The top 1% hoard their wealth while the rest of us are stuck in a cycle of debt, stagnating wages, and skyrocketing living costs. The richest 1% of Americans own more than 40% of the country\u2019s wealth. Meanwhile, the bottom 50% collectively own just 1%. A level playing field is never an option when corporate greed reigns supreme. The system is rigged whether we want to acknowledge it or not.<\/span><\/p>\n

A Selective Kind of Liberty<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Personal freedom used to mean being able to make choices about your own body and life. Today, reproductive rights are under constant assault, with politicians horny to control what women\u2019s bodies. Doesn\u2019t sound creepy at all. Then there\u2019s LGBTQ+ rights. While progress has <\/span>been made<\/span>, there\u2019s always a new push to strip away the hard-won gains. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Changing Narrative<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Is truth truth anymore? Media companies now control what we see, hear, and read, shaping public opinion to suit their agendas and profits. <\/span>The problem is that independent journalism is on the decline and dissenting voices are drowned out by the din of manufactured consent.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stay Vigilant, Reflect, and Act<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

So, as you enjoy the fireworks and festivities this July 4th, take a moment to reflect on where we\u2019re at. Are we truly free, or living under the illusion of liberty? <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s obvious that<\/span> the struggle for independence is still ongoing. <\/span>Change won\u2019t come from the top down \u2013 it\u2019s up to us to stay vigilant, speak out, and fight for the freedoms slipping away.<\/span><\/p>\n
