- The Father’s Day Shirt That Explains Every Denomination

Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

DALL-E
Father’s Day at my house has a subgenre. My two daughters are locked in a quiet, ongoing campaign to be named the favorite child, and the gift table is where the campaigning happens. This year I unwrapped a shirt that read “Awesome Like My Youngest Daughter.” I own variants. There’s a modest collection of them in a drawer, each one a salvo in a war I am not, technically, fighting.
My two sons, for the record, were never in the running. Not because they lost — because they declined to enter. The girls arrived at this verdict independently and now treat it as settled law: the boys are simply ineligible. Out of the bracket. Disqualified by disinterest.
And this is the part I keep landing on. None of this is about me.
I’m Not the Prize. I’m the Trophy Case.
I’d love to tell you I’m an innocent bystander, caught in the crossfire of two people who love me too aggressively. But that’s not quite it. The tribute shows up regardless. The shirts arrive. The mugs arrive. The rivalry generates its own fuel and routes the output upward: to me, the guy at the top who lifts not one finger and somehow ends the day with a drawer full of cotton declaring his preferences for him.
I don’t campaign. I don’t have to. I never even wear the things in public. They live at home, deployed only around the family, which tells you exactly who the audience is. The contest isn’t for the world. It’s for the household.
I’m not the dad caught in the middle. I’m the throne.
Every Church Is the Favorite Child
Which is, give or take a building fund, how denominations work.
Every single one has independently concluded that it, specifically, is the apple of God’s eye — the favorite, the chosen, the one He reaches for first. (Just not the apple of knowledge. That one ships with a Terms of Service and an eviction notice.)
Each one knows the others are sincere, well-meaning, and tragically a little off. Each one has the real gospel, the unbroken line, the correct read on the verses everyone else fumbles. And each one is absolutely certain that if God were forced to pick a shirt, He’d pick theirs.
And the oldest version of the whole spectacle is two siblings. In 1054 the Western and Eastern churches split (the Great Schism, triggered partly by a single added word) and excommunicated each other so thoroughly the ban outlasted the printing press, the Reformation, and both world wars before anyone lifted it, in 1965. Both still insist, to this day, that it is the one who stayed faithful and the other that wandered off. Same fight, older robes, much longer grudge.
The Part Where Somebody Designed the System
Here’s where the cute ends.
In the family version, I’m a passive beneficiary by accident. The shirts pile up because my kids love me and have a strange way of showing it. Nobody sat down and engineered it. It’s just what happens when two people want the same thing and I happen to be standing where the thing lands.
Church is the version where somebody engineered it.
The whole apparatus is built to take ordinary human rivalry — who’s right, who’s holiest, who’s in, who’s out — and route it upward, where it gets a new label on the way. Halfway up, it stops being ego and becomes glory. Stops being we want to be the best and becomes we want to honor God best. Same fuel. Holier sticker.
And God? Supposedly transcends the entire contest. Allegedly isn’t keeping a leaderboard. By every account in the brochure, couldn’t care less which franchise has the better worship band. And yet ends up with His name stamped on every receipt. The throne doesn’t work the room. It doesn’t have to. The machine works the room on His behalf and files the proceeds under worship.
That’s the move: human beings competing for status, system quietly relabeled as devotion.
The Ones Who Walked
And then there are the ones who walked.
My sons didn’t lose the favorite-child contest. They looked at it, correctly identified it as deranged, and left the building. For this they receive nothing. No shirt, no mug, no honorable mention. The rivalry has no category for declined to participate. You’re either competing or you don’t exist.
Ask anyone who left the faith how that goes.
The dones, the deconstructed, the walked-away — they didn’t lose an argument about who has the truest doctrine. They looked at the entire leaderboard, saw it for what it was, and opted out. And the system has exactly one response to that, which is to pretend they were never eligible to begin with. Not defeated. Disqualified by disinterest. Out of the bracket.
You don’t get written off for losing. You get written off for refusing to play.
None of This Is About God
So no, none of it has anything to do with God. Not the family version, not the church version. The family version is two sisters and a dad who happens to be standing under the trophy. The church version is the same thing with a building fund, a merch table, and a thousand years of robes.
I’ve got a drawer full of shirts I never wear, declaring a preference I never stated, generated by a contest I never entered.
I know exactly how that God feels.
