Help The Englewood Neighborhood win $25,000 to finish our Outdoor Nature Playspace! 2013-04-04T14:37:32-05:00 Christopher Smith

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Starting today, the Englewood Neighborhood on the Near Eastside of Indianapolis (where I live, work and worship), is in the running for a $25,000 grant Neighborhood Assist Grant from State Farm.

If we would win, the money would be used to turn our community garden and the adjacent lot into a playspace and Nature education outdoor classroom

We have worked with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful to develop a plan for the space, which if you are interested, you can view here…

The plans include lots of trees for climbing, fruit trees, a tree house, water play area, a picnic shelter and more.

Sandwiched between two abandoned industrial complexes, the little Englewood neighborhood has no parks and very minimal public greenspace. Located in a food desert, food and gardening education is an important piece of the comprehensive development of our neighborhood.  Englewood Community Development has coordinated a community garden in this space for at least 12 years and this grant would help expand the garden into a space that in addition to growing food, would encourage imaginative play and nature education.

We’d love for you to vote 10 times daily for our project:

You must be a Facebook user to vote, and you can vote up to 10 times each day from April 4-22.

For more info, and to receive a daily reminder to vote, go to our Facebook event and indicate that you are “going” to this event (not a real event, just a virtual space to let people know about this opportunity).

Here is a promo video that we made for this project, which is a good introduction:

To learn more about some of the things going on in our neighborhood and the broader Near Eastside of Indianapolis, here are a couple of pieces that I wrote for Christianity Today‘s This is Our City:
