Dowsing for Divinity is moving to dowsingfordivinity.wordpress.com. I would like to thank Jason Mankey and Christine Hoff Kraemer for their excellent editorship of the Patheos Pagan Channel, and the support they have always offered to all the writers here. I would also like to thank everyone who has read and commented on my posts here, and my fellow Pagan blog authors for their companionship, inspiration, and quality writing. Read more

Review of Queer Paganism by Jo Green

Last updated on: December 28, 2016 at 8:02 am   By Yvonne Aburrow

This book would definitely be of interest to queer Pagans and open-minded heterosexuals, as it is not only about queer Paganism, but is about an inclusive practice. Read more

Imagining Other Possible Worlds

Last updated on: December 2, 2016 at 4:55 am   By Yvonne Aburrow

Science fiction, particularly the writings of Ursula le Guin, explores hypothetical alternative societies, cultures, futures, and histories. I am currently watching Babylon 5 again on DVD, and would highly recommend it as an exploration of what happens when a totalitarian and xenophobic government takes over, and how people come together to resist. Alternative visions of the world Both fantasy and SF present alternative visions of the world. Some of these visions are helpful, and others are not. Some are dystopian,... Read more

You say you want a revolution? (Review)

Last updated on: December 2, 2016 at 4:13 am   By Yvonne Aburrow

The exhibition tells the story of social change in the sixties through music, fashion, posters, propaganda, a very grainy video of the Moon landings, a piece of Moon rock, and much more. It includes album covers, clothes, furniture, a Wiccan sword, a goat head mask made by Arnold Crowther, The Lord of the Rings memorabilia, music, design, and architecture. Read more

A Pagan Requiem

Last updated on: November 23, 2016 at 10:21 am   By Yvonne Aburrow

I have been thinking for a while that we need more liturgical poetry in Pagan traditions. I have been thinking for a while about the beautiful pieces of music composed for the Requiem Mass, and thinking how great it would be to have a Pagan Requiem – something life-affirming, but acknowledging grief and death. So I wrote one. Feel free to use it – please credit me if you do. If anyone feels like composing some music for it, that... Read more

New Book Coming Soon!

Last updated on: November 22, 2016 at 7:47 am   By Yvonne Aburrow

Inner work is a name commonly given to the inner processes that happen in ritual. However, the best kind of inner work also has an effect outside the individual and outside the circle. When rituals are focused only on self-development, they tend to be a bit too introspective. Ritual is about creating and maintaining relationships and connections - between body, mind, and spirit; with the Earth, Nature, the land, the spirit world, the community, and friends. Read more

“But I’m not racist”

Last updated on: November 16, 2016 at 6:56 am   By Yvonne Aburrow

Sure, not everyone who voted for Trump or for Brexit was a white supremacist, or a homophobe, or a misogynist, or anti-disabled. But they were people who ignored the blatant misogynist, homophobic, anti-disabled, and racist rhetoric of the campaigns, and voted for Trump or Brexit anyway. If you did that, it implies that you don’t care enough about the concerns of minority groups who will be victimised by the far-right policies of Trump or the Tories and by the violent attacks by thugs who feel vindicated in their racism, homophobia, misogyny, or anti-disabled attitudes. Read more

The safety pin: a reminder to resist bigotry

Last updated on: November 14, 2016 at 5:05 am   By Yvonne Aburrow

If you see someone being attacked (whether physically or verbally), don’t stay silent. If the perpetrator is too scary to tackle, try to get the victim away to safety, and make sure they know that you don’t agree with the perpetrator. In these situations, silence from bystanders is assumed by the perpetrator and the victim to be approval of the perpetrator’s actions. Read more
