Donald Trump absolutely fascinates me.
Even before he decided to run for President, I’ve always thought “The Donald” was a peculiar and compelling personality. His success is well known but it’s the man behind the success that really intrigues me. How did this guy who seems to be without a filter, who is so brash and even immature at times achieve so much? Why is it that Donald is one of the most famous billionaires in the world when there are many more people who have much more wealth than him? These are the questions I had and that’s why a couple of weeks ago, I decided to read Donald Trump’s book, “Trump: The Art of the Deal
.”
“Trump: The Art of the Deal” was written in 1987 so it pre-dates the Donald we know today and gives a pretty good look into the early years of Donald Trump. Donald’s father was a builder as well but he was a modest home builder in New York’s Burroughs. As a kid, Donald found his love of building through his Dad but always knew he wanted more- he wanted to achieve more success in a bigger way so that he would distinguish himself from his father. Donald of course finds this success by negotiating incredible deals with the city of New York and building hotels and towers across the city while creating a brand name in the process.
I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. As an entrepreneur myself, it was interesting to see Donald’s approach to business and how he was absolutely determined to create deals that would ultimately net him millions of dollars. I was also fascinated by his approach to the work day- he said he’d try not to have any meetings lasting longer than fifteen minutes because if you can’t get your point across in fifteen minutes, it probably wasn’t a good deal. I think Donald knew early on that to build a brand built on luxury and notoriety, he had to be a polarizing figure so that his buildings would always be featured in the papers. That’s not to say he didn’t possess those qualities to begin with but he certainly highlighted them any chance he got and it seems that trend is continuing today. Throughout the book, Donald describes his deals in detail and allows the readers to see just how much work and negotiating goes into creating his multi-million dollar projects.
Love him or hate him, I think we can all agree the guy is interesting. If you want to know more about Trump or you just have a passion for entrepreneurialism like I do, “The Art of the Deal” is a good read. If you have a suggestion for the next book I should read, let me know in the comments below.
