Aborted Ethics and Wrongful Liabilities: What Hath the Court Wrought?
Last updated on: March 4, 2018 at 1:05 pm By Scott Eric Alt
You will have heard, I take it, of a recent “wrongful birth” lawsuit. It was but one in a long string of them. The Daily Screech reported on it in August: After an amniocentesis, parents were told they had a healthy baby; parents delivered the baby. Turned out, baby has Syndrome Z. Turned out, the medical office had misread the results. So parents sued on the premise that they would have aborted the baby if only they had known about the Syndrome Z. This was not a unique case; half of all U.S. states recognize “wrongful birth” as a cause of action, and one couple was awarded a full $50 million in such a suit. Yesterday Brandy Zadrozny, also for the Screech, reported on the inverse of all this. [...] Read more

Anti-Papal Malarkey and Damnable Schism: Pope Francis Derangement Syndrome Vol. X
Last updated on: March 17, 2018 at 11:13 pm By Scott Eric Alt
Pope Francis Derangement Syndrome, on the right, has reached full-scale, raw and tuneless, no-holds-barred, cloud-cuckoo-land, blasted and screaming nuttery. I know this because of how Maureen Mullarkey begins her recent column at The Federalist. After charging Rachel Lu with “timidity” for telling the pope’s critics on the right to stop the invective lest they be used by the left, Mullarkey proceeds to compare faithful Catholics who defend the pope to docile Jews being led off to the gas chambers. Well, it did not take long for the editorial staff at First Things, after Mullarkey published this piece of venom, to issue this embarrassed retraction. One wonders whether The Federalist will be far behind. [...] Read more

A Frustrated Steve Hays Resorts to Ad Hominem, More Haze
Last updated on: March 9, 2017 at 1:10 am By Scott Eric Alt
This post is the latest in a discussion between myself and Reformed “apologist” Steve "Purple" Haze of Failablogue, on the topic of NFP and the pope’s words about rabbits. It will have to be my closing statement on the topic. It is always best to state the truth as clearly as you can, and then let it go. Mr. Haze begins his new post in this wild and frothing way: “Papal lackey Scott Eric Alt is once again trying to save the pope’s rancid bacon." Poor soul. That’s okay. I’m patient here. I get it. The lights are slow to go on at Failablogue. Frustration leads to anger; anger leads to hate; hate leads to suffering! So let us, with patience, help poor Purple Haze. [...] Read more

Glenn Beck Needs a Team to Teach Him About Catholicism: Pope Francis Derangement Syndrome Vol. IX
Last updated on: April 7, 2018 at 12:03 am By Scott Eric Alt
Glenn Beck, with the selfless charity of one who thinks well of himself, has offered to put together a “team” that will teach Pope Francis what capitalism really is. Whenever I see stuff like this, I always wonder whether those saying it have read the pope’s words first-hand. Have they read Church social teaching, in the Church’s own words? Do they think they need to? Or do they get all their information about the Church and the pope from the secular press? Quid est veritas? Rush Limbaugh held firm to his conviction that the pope is a Marxist based solely on a misquotation in Reuters. He was asked to check the transcript. He did not, though he himself confirmed that he was asked. [...] Read more

Scuse Me While I Refute This Guy: A Reply to Steve “Purple” Hays on the Pope, NFP, and C-Sections
Last updated on: March 9, 2017 at 1:17 am By Scott Eric Alt
Steve "Purple" Hays of Failablogue (he calls it Triablogue, for duplicitous reasons of his own) has replied to my post from Friday. If your general practitioner has affirmed that you are safely free from stomach acid and there’s no danger that it will blow up on you from exposure to bilge, you can read it yourself. But since the man is in a deep muddle about this issue of C-sections and NFP and Pope Francis, I’m going to fisk his post with some length and patience. I’m always here to help. It’s a service I offer Calvinists on my blog. Mr. Hays begins his post by referring to me as “one of this pope’s many self-appointed handlers” and “a lay blogger.” Now, I know why he does this: It is to poison the well. [...] Read more

In Attack on Pope, Polemical Rogue John Bugay Makes Crude Joke About Multiple Orgasms. (You Read That Right.)
Last updated on: April 7, 2018 at 12:07 am By Scott Eric Alt
There is no cesspool so foul that John Bugay will not jump into it with full-throated glee if it serves his hatred of the Catholic Church. The man lost his shame years ago. Consider that it was this very same polemical rogue who once photoshopped a Hitler moustache onto St. Therese of Lisieux, removed it only under the strong persuasion of his pastor, and all the while whimpered that he had been much maligned and abused by the Catholics who called him out. Well, dear reader, the dog has returned to his vomit, this time with a foul and smelly joke about orgasms. But I’ll get to that. (For those who really don’t wish to read it, it comes up in section 3 of the post; you can skip that part.) [...] Read more

Rick Santorum Should Read the Transcript of Pope Francis’s “Rabbits” Remark. So Should Everyone Else.
Last updated on: March 9, 2017 at 1:19 am By Scott Eric Alt
I think the number of three children per family that you mentioned ... I think it is the number experts say is important to keep the population going. ... When this decreases, the other extreme happens, like what is happening in Italy. I have heard, I do not know if it is true, that in 2024 there will be no money to pay pensioners because of the fall in population." Rick Santorum seems not to know that the pope did indeed say this about declining populations. Matt Wilstein at Mediaite seems not to have heard that the Catholic Church has long permitted spacing births through NFP. And a reporter at CBS seems not to know the pope walked nothing back in the days after the interview. So it goes. [...] Read more

More Liberal Denial and Despair Over Pope Francis: Pope Francis Derangement Syndrome Vol. VIII
Last updated on: March 4, 2018 at 2:14 pm By Scott Eric Alt
Liberalism, as it exists today, is a fairy tale that occasionally bumps up against truth, gets perplexed and angry for a spell, then returns to Neverland. In few places is this more true than in the liberal media’s coverage of Pope Francis. I have written about this sad phenomenon many a time and oft. Their delusions about Francis, and their ignorance of the Church they write about, never ends. And they seem to be woefully incurious about getting it right. In the latest episode of this saga, an anonymous author (AA) for inquisitr.com writes an article titled “Pope Francis Might Not Be As Awesome As We Thought He Was.” Oh, no! Does that sound to you like it was written by someone in high school? [...] Read more

Josh Alcorn Bans the Vagina Monologues
Last updated on: March 4, 2018 at 1:57 pm By Scott Eric Alt
Well, the Vagina Monologues is no more. Its sexual politics are no longer inclusive enough. So after a run of nineteeen straight years, Mt. Holyoke College has canceled the play on the grounds that it is "blatantly transphobic" and excludes women without vaginas. The peculiar phrase “women without vaginas” is meant to include both real women without vaginas and men who think they’re women. Now, there are two things that interest me about this. The first is that it is an instance of reaching the right conclusion through the wrong logic. And the second is the timing. It comes nearly on the heels of the suicide of Josh Alcorn. [...] Read more

We Must Offend, and Other Quick Takes: 7QT XIX Seriatim
Last updated on: April 7, 2018 at 12:11 am By Scott Eric Alt
We must be willing to give offense, and be a sign of offense. This is particularly true in a culture that is all wrought up about relativism at the same time it is hell-bent on imposing what Orwell called “smelly little orthodoxies.” Not all opinions should be treated with equal respect. I have deep contempt for anti-Catholicism. I have deep contempt for poor argumentation and faulty logic, because I believe that it is our God-given reason that leads us to truth, and truth matters. If we are not willing to give offense, and in some contexts lose our lives for it, then we may as well abandon the pursuit of truth—and freedom—altogether. [...] Read more
