Not your grandfather’s vampires

Last updated on: September 14, 2025 at 12:18 pm   By Coyle Neal

Vampires came of age a few years after I did with the publication of Twilight, and the world in one sense has never been the same. Gone were the pure evil creatures of Bram Stoker, or the adult mixed bag of Anne Rice. Instead, vampires are now for Young Adults and adult explorations like Del Toro’s The Strain feel like oddities. Which might make Isabel Canes’s Vampires of El Norte an oddity, but it is a fascinating and well-written one. Don’t get me wrong, Vampires of... Read more

Dever on the Bible

Last updated on: September 10, 2025 at 5:26 pm   By Coyle Neal

Years ago and early in his ministry at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, DC, Mark Dever preached through the whole Bible in 66 weeks. That is, he preached a sermon on each book of the Bible, and somehow still managed to make them expositional sermons (“the point of the passage is the point of your sermon,” as he often says). He then published those volumes as The Message of the Old Testament: Promises Made and The Message of the New Testament: Promises... Read more

Whitefield on the Christian Life

Last updated on: August 12, 2025 at 3:11 pm   By Coyle Neal

Crossway’s series of theologians on the Christian life (many of which are reviewed here) continues to be excellent with its recent addition of a book on George Whitefield. Like other preachers, Whitefield was not a systematic thinker. Which makes this book all the more impressive, since it presents Whitefield’s work in a far more orderly fashion than Whitefield himself did. There is a lot in this book that’s worthwhile–it is well-written, careful with the source material, and interesting. If you’re... Read more

Religion and Republic: Introduction

Last updated on: August 8, 2025 at 2:01 pm   By Coyle Neal

I’m still not committing to blogging through all of Miles Smith’s recent(ish) book Religion & Republic: Christian America from the Founding to the Civil War, but since I did the preface last week and the Introduction this week it’s looking more and more likely this will be a Kuyper-esque series (which I need to get back to–I want to read Pro Rege!)  I don’t know that I’ll post about every chapter in the book, but the Preface was intriguing enough I... Read more

Religion & Republic: Preface

I’m reading through Miles Smith’s recent(ish) book Religion & Republic: Christian America from the Founding to the Civil War. I don’t know that I’ll post about every chapter in the book, but the Preface was intriguing enough I thought it worth a short response here. The overall point of the book, as least according to the preface, is to explore the early history of “Christian America” not through our modern understanding of what it means to be a “Christian” nation, but... Read more

In support of the draft

Nearly thirty years later than most people, I finally got around to reading J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye. If the point of this book is to make me support the draft and sending teenagers off to get some life experience in the jungles, then mission accomplished. Because Holden Caulfield needs to spend some time doing push ups, running laps, and risking his life for a meaningful cause. I don’t think this is just my age speaking, I’m pretty sure... Read more

Something’s Wrong in the Neighborhood

Last updated on: July 21, 2025 at 3:19 pm   By Coyle Neal

What’s wrong with America today? There are a lot of answers to that question, but one that we Americans are most likely to forget is the collapse of our communities. We tend to be caught up in individualism, and so focus on fixing individuals (work harder, get government assistance, transform your attitude/body/job, etc). But what if the biggest problem is that our neighborhoods are sick? This is the subject of Seth Kaplan’s recent book Fragile Neighborhoods: Repairing American Society one Zip... Read more

Screens melt our brains

Last updated on: July 17, 2025 at 9:21 am   By Coyle Neal

We all know that we’re addicted to technology. At this point, it’s not even really a debate. But what we haven’t done is through through the implications of this for our lives as individuals and as the church. To help us with that, Brett McCracken and Ivan Mesa have edited a volume of essays reflecting on just how screens affect us in their new book Scrolling ourselves to death: Reclaiming Life in a Digital Age. Drawing on the insight’s of Postman’s... Read more

John MacArthur has gone to be with the Lord. With him, passes one of the people who has done the most to shape modern Evangelicalism (along with John Piper and Billy Graham). His study Bible and commentaries are go-tos for countless pastors (I’m not a pastor, but I almost always check his study Bible when working on a passage of Scripture–even when I disagree with its conclusions), his sermons and radio show make the rounds (or did back when people... Read more

Blast from the Past

In a moment of nostalgia inspired by it being free to stream on Prime (with commercials included, which I hate–why I am paying their yearly membership fee if Primeable streaming includes commercials? Fight me on this Amazon…), I rewatched the classic film Highlander. And by “classic”, I mean “weird, but delightful.” Somebody prior to 1986 in Hollywood said to a filmmaker “I want to make a movie about immortals who have to fight to the death with swords while secretly living... Read more
