Schaff on Christmas
Last updated on: December 18, 2025 at 2:12 pm By Coyle Neal
On your “to-read-someday” list should be Philip Schaff’s 8-volume history of the church. Not least because it includes gems like this: “The Christmas festival is the celebration of the incarnation of the Son of God. It is occupied, therefore, with the event which forms the centre and turning-point of the history of the world. It is of all the festivals the one most thoroughly inter-woven with the popular and family life, and stands at the head of the great feasts... Read more

The Bible on the Moon
Last updated on: December 16, 2025 at 3:42 pm By Coyle Neal
I am wrapping up 2025 in part by listening to Andrew Chaikin’s A Man on the Moon: The Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts. It is an absolutely fascinating read for lots of reasons, including the fact that the Apollo 10 crew had to be the sort of people who wanted to go all the way to the moon and then not land on it, despite having everything that Apollo 11 would have… Or the fact that the moon is utterly desolate.... All the Grinch movies ranked
Last updated on: December 12, 2025 at 3:42 pm By Coyle Neal
Are there really enough movies about the Grinch to even bother ranking them? Well, there’s more than one. So yes–the title isn’t just clickbait (not that I’m opposed to clickbait, of course–the Neal children must be fed!). But there are more than you might think. So without further ado, here is the definitive list of movies about the Grinch from worst to best (or from “mid to brat”, as Google tells me the kids would say these days). 5. The Grinch Grinches... Repost: Christmas in the Country
Last updated on: December 9, 2025 at 4:58 pm By Coyle Neal
Four years ago I posted a review of every Country Music Christmas album ever. Okay, not really. But I did hit all the big ones. And, looking back, that was a solid list and they are still the best albums. So I’m linking the post and would encourage you to listen to some great Christmas music from the recommendations therein. More Christmas (listening) in the Country Dr. Coyle Neal is co-host of the City of Man Podcast an Amazon Associate (which is... Read more

Dante’s Way
Last updated on: December 8, 2025 at 3:41 pm By Coyle Neal
I’ve said on here before that the Inklings are having a moment. Yet another example of this is the publication of The Way of Dante: Going through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven with C.S. Lewis, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Charles Williams by Richard Hughes Gibson. Now of course this is technically a book about Dante–and maybe he’s having a moment too. If he isn’t he should be. But as the ridiculously long subtitle tells us, it’s not just a book about Dante. It’s a book about the... Read more

A Response to Josiah Gogarty
Last updated on: December 3, 2025 at 10:12 am By Coyle Neal
Over at GQ, Josiah Gogarty has a delightful little reflection on the music of A Charlie Brown Christmas. You should of course read the whole thing. And if you haven’t seen it, you should go out of your way to watch the special and then pick up the album. (I’ve linked the CD rather than the streaming option, but I’ll leave a discussion of “ownership” vs “access” for another post.) In his excellent piece, Gogarty gets a lot of things right: the... Sayers on Cinema
Last updated on: December 1, 2025 at 3:28 pm By Coyle Neal
The Inklings and their generation are having a moment in the Evangelical world. Twenty years ago Jonathan Edwards and the Puritans were au courant (I know, I was part of that moment and even squeezed out a dissertation on Edwards). Now, it is Lewis, Tolkien, and the British lit crit crowd of the World War II era. Consider for example Crystal Downing’s recent book The Wages of Cinema: A Christian Aesthetic of Film in Conversation with Dorothy L. Sayers (out now... Read more

The Biggest Advent
Last updated on: November 5, 2025 at 3:04 pm By Coyle Neal
As Evangelicals continue the (entirely right) process of “getting high“, a recent book nudging that trend along is Kevin DeYoung’s Biggest Story: Advent. Not only is this a book about Advent (and hence a nudge in the liturgical direction), but it is a not-very-traditional approach to Advent (so DeYoung tells us) that focuses on the Old Testament pointing towards the coming of Christ, rather than the traditional Christmas readings from the New Testament. In both it is a nice little addition... Read more

Three for the wee ones
Last updated on: October 18, 2025 at 12:11 pm By Coyle Neal
Board books are both hard and easy to write (I assume–never having written one myself). On the one hand, they just have to be short and colorful–the content doesn’t matter all that much to the kid in question most of the time. On the other hand, they do have to be decent for the parents if you don’t want to drive us insane. Fortunately Hannah Estes and Jessica Hiatt have hit that balance well in the latest three entries into... Read more

Take Time to Be Holy
Last updated on: September 16, 2025 at 3:38 pm By Coyle Neal
How do you grow as a believer? Do you think that you’ll grow better in a more hands-on religion like Roman Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy? If so, Matthew Bingham has things to say to you in A Heart Aflame for God: A Reformed Approach to Spiritual Formation. Specifically, he is arguing that 1) Protestants have a long tradition of thinking Biblically and well about spiritual growth (which is what the bulk of the book is about), so no need to cross...
