Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
In this week’s Top of the Country Taylor Swift returns to her long-running spot with her new song “I Knew It, I knew You.” If you’re counting (and I obviously am), it has been five years since Taylor held a #1 spot on the Country charts with the re-release of “All to Well” as she worked back through her catalog for rights purposes. If we don’t count those (and I probably wouldn’t, but that’s a different conversation), then it has been fourteen years since 2012 when “We are never ever getting back together” topped both the Country and Pop Charts, and rocketed her from Country into mainstream music. Whether she ever looked back to her Country roots is up for debate, and the release of “I knew It, I knew You” doesn’t particularly change that debate given how aggressively it is being pushed by Disney.
But enough of the corporate stuff, on to the song!
For this blog we’ll leave the Toy Story stuff out (not least because the movie isn’t even out yet) and just deal with it as a Country song. And like many of Country songs, this one leaves a good deal of ambiguity.
Some Country songs are great because they are specific–he is broken-hearted; she is afraid; they are in love; those others are dead; etc. But some Country songs are solid because they are vague (just why is he “so lonesome I could cry” anyway?). “I knew it I knew You” fits into the vague category, though with enough specificity to give the song some substance.
“I knеw you, all your blues like a mood ring changing colors
You did too, therе were times we could fight like brothers
I watched you drive around the bend for
What I thought would be the last time I saw my friend
But love has ways of bringing things back to life
All you said was, “Hi””
So, did they get back together or not? We get a lot of specificity about how sad they were to break up and go their separate ways, but what is the ending? Is it a happy one or a sad one? We simply don’t know, and the hook of songs that leave such things vague is that they appeal to people in each situation. Are you happy to have been reconnected with a friend you’ve not seen for a while? Then this song is for you. Are you sad to be still disconnected from a loved one? Then this song is for you too. It’s really a brilliant bit of songwriting, which is Taylor’s strength. (And I write this as someone who is definitely not a Swiftie–not least because I basically wasn’t listening to Country music the whole time she was rising.)
I suspect the next few weeks (months?) will involve a revival of the debate over Taylor Swift’s place in Country music, especially as this song gets more and more airplay on the radio. Some of the results of that debate will tie in to the success or failure of the movie itself, but I think either way people will have thoughts.
I will say from a Christian perspective we can empathize with the vagueness we see here. We are both separated from and present with the Friend who is closer than a brother. We are part of a local body of believers, and long for the day “when congregations ne’er break up and Sabbaths have no end.” “I Knew It, I knew You” catches some of the feeling we ought to have every Sunday, and indeed every day on this side of heaven.
