Once again it’s the time of year where we look back and judge the books that we’ve read over the year. These are the books that weren’t found wanting. As always, these are the “best books” I read this year–not necessarily the best books that were written this year or the best books that one could have read this year.

Theology

Growing in Christ by J.I. Packer. Reviewed here.

You are not your own by Alan Noble. The title probably defends itself from the Christian perspective, but it’s still a good reminder. And this book is full of good reminders.

Fiction

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky. If you think a book about spiders is going to make your skin crawl instead of being written with gentle… humanity… you’d be mistaken. This is an excellent book and I’m sorry it took me so long to get to it.

Three-Body Problem by Cixin Lu. This book is interesting for a lot of reasons, and needs to be on the shelf next to classic works of Sci-Fi like We, Solaris, or The Foundation Pit.

Biography

The Completion of C.S. Lewis by Harry Lee Poe. Reviewed here.

Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey. Be sure you listen to the Audiobook–the one that McConaughey narrates himself. Seriously, this book is fantastic.

Politics

The Religion of American Greatness by Paul Miller, the founder/absentee landlord of this blog, interview with the author available here.

On Obligations by Cicero. Should we do what’s right or what’s useful? Cicero says they’re the same thing, so quit whining and do what you should. Or something like that, anyway.

Letters from a Stoic by Seneca. Speaking of quitting whining, Seneca’s Letters from a Stoic is superb, especially as read on Audible.

Beyond Racial Division by George Yancey. Interview with the author available here.
