Two on Happiness
Last updated on: September 12, 2026 at 2:54 pm By Coyle Neal
Two new books on happiness have come out in the last few months, one on happiness itself and one on what Christians can learn from Aristotle–who was himself deeply concerned with happiness. The one on happiness itself is the latest from Andrew Wilson and simply titled Happiness. In this book we get an overview of what Scriptures has to say about happiness in the Christian (and in the human) life overall. Namely, we are made for happiness, but we often don’t... Read more

Reacher gets interesting
Last updated on: September 11, 2026 at 5:29 pm By Coyle Neal
We’ve reviewed Amazon’s series Reacher here a few times in the past. Season 4 continues to be excellent and lives up to the standards of its predecessors. I’ve not read the book it’s based on, but it is solid so far. Oh sure, there is the odd plot hole here and there (are we really concerned about chemical warfare technology from 30 years ago?), but the mystery is interesting, the action excellent, and the whole thing well made. Reacher is a solid show, and... Read more

Top of the Country: Don’t Tell on Me
Last updated on: July 13, 2026 at 6:22 pm By Coyle Neal
In this week’s Top of the Country we take a look at Jason Aldean’s song “Don’t Tell On Me.” Jason Aldean is back at the top of the charts with his song “Don’t Tell On Me” It is a solid song and very much a traditional Country music work. What’s especially interesting is the question of who he’s talking to. (Obviously if we get a music video this might be answered, but with just a lyric video available the question... Read more

Jerome
Last updated on: July 13, 2026 at 6:02 pm By Coyle Neal
I’ve engaged in the multi-year project of reading through the Church Fathers, and have come to Jerome. Specifically the volume of the second series that focuses on his letters, polemical works, and Scriptural prefaces. And with it, we have come to the era of the Church Fathers that are very much a mixed bag. On the one hand, Jerome knows the Bible backwards and forwards, and is unafraid to show it. He doesn’t always use it well, mind you, but he is... Read more

Top of the Country: Hate How You Look
Last updated on: July 8, 2026 at 9:09 am By Coyle Neal
In this week’s Top of the Country a new voice (for this blog, anyway) rises with Josh Ross’s song “Hate How You Look.” The title of the song doesn’t give away much, leaving lots of possibilities open–will this be a Taylor Swift style song, a revenge song, a song full of yearning and loss, something in between? Will it be slow and reflective, fast and angry, or again something in between? Give it a listen for yourself. This is a... Read more

Thinking Critically about Critical Theory
Last updated on: July 5, 2026 at 4:46 pm By Coyle Neal
Thinking critically about Critical Theory is a review of What is Critical Theory? A few years ago, everyone in the world was up in arms about critical theory. But just what the heck is it anyway? To answer this question Bradley Green has published the book What is Critical Theory: A Concise Christian Analysis. (Also to answer this question I published this a few years ago on this blog.) If you’re interested in the topic, you should read the book. That said,... Read more

Movies for the Fourth of July
Last updated on: July 1, 2026 at 8:42 pm By Coyle Neal
What movies should you watch for the Fourth of July? Great question, glad you asked! There are two ways you could do this: one is to watch the greatest movies that capture the spirit of America. Shane, Rocky, O Brother Where Art Thou? (to mention three I use in class to teach that very thing) are all great contenders. But with a headline click-baiting that hard, you know what I meant. So here are four films you can watch to celebrate what makes... Read more

Look Elsewhere
Last updated on: June 28, 2026 at 11:06 am By Coyle Neal
There are a handful of people who are good at lots of things, and some people who excel at one thing. I don’t know which category Keanu Reeves fits into, but I know that his acting is better than his novel-writing (and I suspect he’d agree with me). I know this because I just finished his co-authored novel The Book of Elsewhere. It is a very interesting idea for a book. A lone wanderer keeps coming back to life after being... Read more

To Live Well
Last updated on: June 8, 2026 at 10:44 am By Coyle Neal
Review of To Live Well by Alan Noble. Virtue has fallen on hard times in contemporary American life. Where we used to spill a lot of ink thinking about the right thing to do in a given circumstance, more and more our concern is merely “winning” and not “doing good.” This means a book like To Live Well is jarring for us in ways it would not have been for previous generations. Even more jarring is the list of virtues. This list... Read more

Top of the Country: I Knew It I Knew You
Last updated on: June 17, 2026 at 3:07 pm By Coyle Neal
In this week’s Top of the Country Taylor Swift returns to her long-running spot with her new song “I Knew It, I knew You.” If you’re counting (and I obviously am), it has been five years since Taylor held a #1 spot on the Country charts with the re-release of “All to Well” as she worked back through her catalog for rights purposes. If we don’t count those (and I probably wouldn’t, but that’s a different conversation), then it has... Read more
