Calvinism’s Achilles Heel
Last updated on: October 26, 2026 at 11:34 am By Roger E. Olson
Actually, I believe traditional, classical Calvinism has several “Achilles Heels.” Here I will expose one of them. I am talking about true, not revisionist Calvinism as represented by John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Hodge, Loraine Boettner, R. C. Sproul, and John Piper. All of those and other classical Calvinist emphasize two points (among others) about God’s sovereignty. First, in the doctrine of providence, they all assert that God foreordains and renders certain everything that happens. In Institutes of the Christian... Read more

Does God Save Everyone He Can?
Last updated on: October 23, 2026 at 9:02 am By Roger E. Olson
Let me remind you that what I write here is often my “theological musings.” Not everything is intended to convince. So, don’t take what follows as doctrine. Yes, God saves everyone he can. Actually, Christians have always agreed about that. Calvinists agree even though they limit God’s saving action to those he foreordained, the “elect.” Leading Calvinist theologian Loraine Boettner said that God saves everyone his nature allows. I’m not a Calvinist so I wouldn’t explain it that way. I... Read more

The Abolition of Man: Appendix: The Tao
Last updated on: October 20, 2026 at 2:44 pm By Roger E. Olson
Here I continue our discussion of C. S. Lewis’s book The Abolition of Man with the Appendix: Illustrations of the Tao. If you have read the Appendix, feel free to comment. If not, feel free to ask a question. Throughout the book we have wondered what all Lewis means by “the Tao.” That is, what does it include? The Appendix answers some of that, giving illustrations. There are other yet unanswered questions such as in what the Tao is grounded.... Read more

Why America Made Halloween Its Unofficial National Holiday
Last updated on: October 19, 2026 at 10:39 am By Roger E. Olson
Thoughts about Halloween We are approaching the date of our new American national holiday: October 31, Halloween. Of course, it’s not really a “national holiday” in any formal or legal sense; schools, banks and government offices don’t close on October 31. By “new national holiday” I mean that, in recent years, what used to be an evening for kids to go door-to-door “trick or treating” has evolved into a popular festival day with television, schools and clubs devoting much time... The Abolition of Man: Chapter 3: The Abolition of Man
Last updated on: October 14, 2026 at 9:51 am By Roger E. Olson
Here I continue discussion of C. S. Lewis’s book The Abolition of Man with Chapter 3 (The Abolition of Man). If you have read the chapter, feel free to comment. If not, feel free to ask a question. In about a week I will take up the Appendix: Illustrations of the Tao. In this chapter Lewis talks about several things related to “the Tao” and the consequences of abandoning it. He talks about the concept of “Man’s power over nature”... Read more

She Survived Her Execution. Should the State Try Again?
Last updated on: October 10, 2026 at 10:41 am By Roger E. Olson
Capital Punishment Is Barbaric For any of you who have not heard the news, very recently, in the United States (Tennessee, to be specific), a woman was executed by lethal injection. O, wait, the state tried to execute her. It failed. They injected her with two lethal doses of the deadly concoction and she survived anyway. They whisked her away from the death chamber to a hospital where she was put on life support (how iron is that) and a... Read more

The Abolition of Man Part 2: Chapter 2: The Way
Last updated on: October 6, 2026 at 1:12 pm By Roger E. Olson
Here I pick up and continue our discussion of C. S. Lewis’s book The Abolition of Man with Chapter 2: The Way. If you have read the chapter you may comment. If not, you may ask a question. I will continue with Chapter 3 in about a week. Here, in Chapter 2, Lewis argues that if there is no “Tao,” by which he means a moral order to the universe, all values are subjective and relative. And those who argue... Read more

Ambiguity without Ambivalence in Faith
Last updated on: October 4, 2026 at 4:25 pm By Roger E. Olson
Can There Be Ambiguity without Ambivalence in Christian Existence? This is a question I’ve been wrestling with for many years without quite being able to express it in this way (see the title above). Put another way, is it possible, as an authentic Christian, to place a question mark over all formal, doctrinal beliefs while at the same time experiencing no ambivalence about the reality behind the doctrines? By “putting a question mark over” I don’t mean denying them; I... Read more

The Abolition of Man Part 1: Men Without Chests
Last updated on: September 30, 2026 at 3:41 pm By Roger E. Olson
Here I begin a discussion of C. S. Lewis’s book The Abolition of Man and take up Chapter 1: Men Without Chests. If you have read the chapter, you are invited to participate, to comment. If not, you are invited only to ask questions. In a week I will take up Chapter 2: The Way. My main concern as I approach this book and this chapter is twofold: first, that some will jump to agree with Lewis too quickly, and... Read more

A Modest Proposal for a Just Social Order
Last updated on: September 26, 2026 at 10:54 am By Roger E. Olson
Note: Don’t forget the upcoming discussion of C. S. Lewis’s masterpiece The Abolition of Man beginning October 1 (2026) What a subject! And such a task! The enormity of it is overwhelming, so all I intend to do here is give a bare bones, that is skeletal, outline of what I regard as the ideal social order. It draws on what I understand to be the social principles of the Kingdom of God tempered by present realities. Thus, this vision... Read more
