How Cooking is Like Evangelism
Last updated on: August 4, 2010 at 5:27 pm By Richard Dahlstrom
When we packed for vacation, we didn’t have a menu. Instead we bought some stuff: string beans, apples, bluberries, spinach, mushrooms, onions, garlic, a little animal protein, some milk and cheese, some eggs. We brought some stuff from home too: butter, olive oil, coffee, coconut oil, nuts. Now that we’re here, it’s just a matter of mixing things up the right way for the right moment. This is last night’s creation, which has no name, and will never be replicated.... Read more

Getting there from here…
Last updated on: August 3, 2010 at 9:55 am By Richard Dahlstrom
I’m on vacation this week, so there are no promises. I might post some photo essays of the North Cascades (vacation in the mountains…surprise!), or some thoughts on reading this week (Tolstoy, Rob Bell, Richard Austin, St. Matthew), but who knows. Last night though, as Donna and I pulled into our resting spot for the week, there was some music playing that had me thinking about the past 31 years of adventure my bride and I have shared together: 1.... Dreams – impossible, improbable, important
Last updated on: July 30, 2010 at 10:04 am By Richard Dahlstrom
It’s been the week of dreams, as I spent my two free evenings seeing both the movie “Inception” and the musical, “Man of La Mancha”. Both were great; well crafted and executed, drawing the audience fully into the story. Both had to do with with dreams and visions, with how we view reality. Both play with the question of what becomes of our lives when the lines between reality and our dreams become blurred. Of all the nuanced considerations of... Read more

“Dungface”
Last updated on: July 28, 2010 at 9:58 am By Richard Dahlstrom
My morning “coffee with God” continues to consist of reading through Matthew in “The Message” and this morning’s read shook me awake yet again: “A student doesn’t get a better desk than her teacher. A laborer doesn’t make more money than his boss. Be content – pleased even – when you, my students, my harvest hands, get the same treatment I get. If they call me, the Master, ‘Dungface’, what can workers expect?” (Matthew 10:24,25) Dungface. The word is a... Read more

“Missional & Evangelism”
Last updated on: July 27, 2010 at 9:16 am By Richard Dahlstrom
I’m reading this morning, during “coffee with God”, out of Matthew 9. I’m reading through the gospels in Eugene Peterson’s “The Message” because I’ve read them lots of time in the more traditional, literal translations, and am finding great joy in being shaken awake by some of his phrases and wording. Listen to how Peterson articulates our calling: “Don’t begin by traveling to some far oof place to convert unbelievers. And don’t try to be dramatic by tackling some public... Read more

Hot Times aren’t ahead – they’re here.

Did you know that in 1940, our food system produced 2.3 calories of food energy for every calorie of fossil fuel it consumed? Now it takes ten calories of fossil energy to produce a single calorie of modern supermarket food. We need to change the way we do things. Ah…but I’m getting ahead of myself. Two weeks ago my wife and I visited a friend in DC who knows the area. She’d recommended a burger place near Capitol Hill... Read more

Resisting Groupthink: Christian and Otherwise
Last updated on: July 21, 2010 at 5:31 am By Richard Dahlstrom
The Holocaust Museum stands in DC as our nation’s tribute to the over six million Jews who were killed in the WWII genocide. There were lots of factors leading up to separation, objectification, deportation, and eventually, annihilation, of the Jews. One of them was the burning of books. Hitler understood that ideas are the soil in which attitudes take root, and that attitudes are always the precursor to action. Change ideas, and you’ll change action. The Bible agrees with him.... the power of words…
Last updated on: July 19, 2010 at 3:09 pm By Richard Dahlstrom
This past Friday my wife and I rented bicycles in DC and rode around, from monument to monument during the evening hours. Though both the design and craftsmanship of these monuments are stunning, I was struck most by the power of the words. At the Lincoln Memorial there was an endless stream of visitors having their picture taken in front of his the president’s feet. Off to the sides though, are two of Lincoln’s speeches. To his right is the... Read more
