Remember Ashkelon

About

The Protecting Infants blog, Remember Ashkelon, is named after the ancient Palestinian coastal city where archaeologists discovered a Roman-Byzantine era sewer littered with the bones of dozens of infants.

The most likely explanation for the deaths of the infants is that the infants were born from a brothel, killed by exposure, and placed in the sewers, though this is disputed in scholarship. You can read an article about Ashkelon and infanticide at Archaeology.

We invoke the name Ashkelon as a vivid reminder of the grotesque nature of infanticide and the terrible misfortune that the mothers of infants can be forced to endure.  We hope to prevent efforts to justify turning modern clinics into miniature Ashkelons.
