I am so grateful to the Times of Israel for the chance to record this conversation with Amanda Borschel-Dan about my new book, What Jesus Learned from Women. It was great to talk with someone, with a particular audience in view, that really knows what it means to talk about Jewish mothers and their influence on their sons!
What Jesus Learned from Women is already beginning to be listed in a number of online booksellers and even some local bookstores, including some that are familiar to readers of theology and other church-related book topics such as Cokesbury. The latter has it with a discount! It also now available from Amazon in hardcover.
The Gospel Coalition is a group that I thought might respond negatively to my book, even based on its title. I was thus pleasantly surprised to have a new article of theirs drawn to my attention, on precisely the topic of Jesus learning!
Andrew Perriman’s review of Jennifer Butler’s Who Stole My Bible? highlights the book’s focus on women in the Gospels.
If you want a clear sense of why I believe this book was necessary, a job advertisement for John Piper’s institution kind of says it all. The job listing says “The candidate will be a man of sincere Christian faith, personal integrity, and commitment to the doctrine and vision of Bethlehem College & Seminary.” Yes, you read that right. It isn’t really surprising if you know this branch of conservative Christianity, but sometimes things can be astonishing and unsurprising, startling and expected, at the same time. The doctrinal commitment, in case you were wondering, is a 50-page document.

If you are interested in the historical Paul the apostle and his “conversion” or epic reversal, I hope you will find the chapter on Joanna/Junia in my book What Jesus Learned from Women surprisingly relevant. I recorded a few thoughts about that based on my discussion in the book:
John Squires blogged about the Jewish background of the Fourth Gospel. He also blogged about the temple in John 2, the serpent in John 3, scriptural imagery in the Book of Signs, and the hour in John 12. See also the post from him and Elizabeth Raine about John 2.
Bob Cornwall’s blogging included some of those same lectionary readings and others: Mark 8, John 2, John 3, and John 12, plus also the foolishness of the cross.
Ian Paul also blogged about these texts: the cleansing of the temple in John 2, God’s love and judgment in John 3, and the paradox of Jesus in John 12. Ian Paul also mentioned the issue of women in the Pauline churches in his recent blog post about preaching on texts from Paul’s letters.
Enough is enough: on efforts towards gender equity
David Capes recorded a podcast about Joshua Jipp’s book Messianic Theology of the New Testament. Brent Neidergall blogged about Matthew Bates’ Gospel Allegiance.
