The United States Supreme Court on Friday, June 24, 2022, ruled in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion.” The decision overturns Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pa. v. Casey. The Court wrote that “the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.”
Here are some reactions from prominent religious writers:
- Catholic writer and American Catholic apologist Dave Armstrong: “I have personally been hoping and praying for this result since I became pro-life in early 1982, after attending a conference on the topic at the evangelical church I was attending then.” Read more
- Catholic writer and former Oklahoma representative Rebecca Hamilton: “At first glance, the decision appears to have land mines that were deliberately left in it to set up future challenges for other things.” Read more
- Pagan writer and Druid grad John Beckett: “This is a horrible day in the history of the United States. In a 5-4 ruling, the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade and in doing so, taken away fundamental rights from half the country.” Read more.
- Evangelical writer Dr. Jim Denison: “As pro-abortion advocates continue to express their anger at the Court’s ruling, it is vital that pro-life advocates respond in ways that are truly “pro-life.” Read more
- Progressive Christian Writer and former pastor Keith Giles: “What I believe we’ll start to see now is a further widening of the division within American culture over the next few years.” Read more
- Msgr. Eric R. Barr, a retired priest, and Catholic writer: “A monstrous decision decades ago was finally dealt a death blow by the Supreme Court as it threw out the constitutional right to an abortion.” Read more
- Evangelical writer and former soldier Anthony Costello: “I think most Evangelicals and traditional, aka, real, Catholics tend to think that while overturning laws like Roe are obviously good, they nevertheless will not change the hearts and minds of the people.” Read more
- Daniel K. Williams, professor of history at the University of West Georgia, and Evangelical writer: “Crisis pregnancies have profound human costs. There are life-changing consequences for women who find themselves pregnant with a child they did not anticipate and may not feel equipped to care for.” Read more
- Evangelical writer and communications specialist David Rupert: “Two things can be true at once. We can rejoice in the shift toward preserving babies in the womb AND we can also embrace those women who are “in distress” due to pregnancy.” Read more
- Pastor and Progressive Christian writer C. Don Jones: “In states where the GOP is practically run by fundamentalists, the legislatures already agreed to bans of abortion or are about to do so. But the victory is not a culture of life.” Read more
- Secular Carmelite and Catholic writer Kristin Wilson: “Abortion has not disappeared from our country; it has moved from a federal issue to a state issue.” Read more
