Your Kids Absorb What You Never Say 2025-11-16T08:06:15-08:00 Kurt W. Bubna
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
You can sit in a room and never open your mouth, yet still deliver a message your kids will remember for years. I’ve witnessed it in my own life. I’ve seen it in the lives of families. And I’ve observed the quiet, unspoken ways children learn who they are by watching who we are.
They don’t need your commentary to understand your spirit. They read your reactions. They feel your tension. They sense the temperature of your soul, and it gradually becomes the climate in which they grow. Attitude leaks. It always does.
What Kids Absorb Without a Word
I’ve watched the same patterns unfold repeatedly.
- A child mirrors a parent’s anger toward a relative who once hurt them.
- A teen becomes suspicious of the people their parents struggle to trust.
- A young child mimics an attitude long before they understand what it even means.
- A teenager grows cynical because cynicism was the background noise of the house.
Kids don’t need a transcript of your opinions. They follow your tone. They catch the spirit you carry. Long before they can articulate their emotions, they absorb yours.
The Quiet Power of Your Inner World
The big idea here is painfully simple. You shape the emotional climate of your home. If you carry bitterness, it spreads. If you carry humility, it spreads. If you carry grace, it spreads.
The atmosphere you create becomes the environment they learn to navigate. And one day, they will carry that same air into their friendships, marriages, and parenting.
James Baldwin said, “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.” That one stings because it’s honest. What we model gets reproduced. What we mutter becomes their vocabulary. What we stew in becomes the flavor they grow up tasting.
What Scripture Says About What We Leak
Proverbs puts it plainly: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Everything. Not just what we say at the right moments. Not just what we hope they remember. Everything.
Jesus added that a tree is known by its fruit. Our children often taste the fruit of our attitudes before anyone else does. And sometimes they taste the bitterness we thought we were hiding.
A Simple Step Toward a Healthier Home
Do one thing today. Check your tone before your child absorbs it. Guard your heart so you can help guide theirs. Slow down long enough to notice what you’re carrying into the room.
Whether you intend it or not, someone smaller than you is learning to live by watching you.
And the climate of their future may very well begin with the atmosphere you create today. Because the environment you carry shapes the atmosphere they breathe.
I’d love to hear from you—seriously.
