Four Questions to Ask when I’m Reading the Bible 2020-05-11T15:12:29-04:00 Bob Robinson
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
The Bible is God’s revelation of who the Godhead is. So, if we want to know God, we need to be reading our Bibles! The Bible also reveals who we are and where we live. So, if we want to understand why we’re such a mixed bag of goodness and sinfulness and how the world around us is supposed to function, we need to be reading our Bibles. In addition, the Bible moves us to respond to God’s love and directs us in how we can participate in Jesus Christ’s mission in the world. Here are four questions to help us get to these key nuggets of biblical wisdom.
1. What Do I Learn about God?
- Who is God?
- What has God done?
- What is God like?
- Why is God worthy of my worship?
2. What Do I Learn about Human Beings and God’s Creation?
- Does this passage show how amazing the world and his creatures, especially we human beings, are supposed to be?
- Does this passage show how the world is not the way it’s supposed to be?
- What has gone wrong? How am I, in my sin, a part of the same problem?
- How do these things make me feel? What do I want to see done about it?
3. What Does This Passage Move Me to Do in Response to God’s Actions and Love?
- Should I worship?
- Should I pray?
- Should I confess?
- Should I repent?
- Should I rejoice?
- Should I serve?
4. What Does This Passage Motivate Me to Do to Participate in God’s Mission to Redeem the World through Christ?
- What has God done in Jesus Christ to address what has gone wrong?
- What does God expect of us in light of this?
- How can I, in my regular day-to-day life, live more intentionally to participate in God’s mission?
