The Saint Nicholas Society

By Benjamin Bongers

Publisher: ‎ En Route Books & Media (April 24, 2022)

Fred went from having it all-the girl, the car, the mansion to being on the street. After being taken in by a kindly priest, he is diagnosed with cancer and begins to question what’s left for him to live for. Nearly falling off the wagon, he is shocked and inspired while watching a modern-day Secret Santa on a TV news broadcast in the bar. Soon he begins to emulate the real Saint by secretly giving to those in need. Along the way he teams up with a band of “misfit-toy” compatriots who each question what life has in store for them. Fred’s story parallels the historic Saint Nikolas of Myra. Told in first person, we learn of then Nicholas’s friendship with an avowed pagan, the loss of his parents at an early age, and his being taken in by an ordained uncle. We follow his life and rise in an outlawed Church, the hardships and fears he had to endure, the communities he created, and his eventual service to the emperor, Constantine.

Let’s face it, life is messy and so are emotions. But, as Hellen Keller said, “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.” This book was written with love, for someone the author loves, and who loves him in return. The twelve stories contain every emotion that we feel daily, but we’re too afraid to let out. They are offered in the hope that readers will give themselves permission to really feel. To laugh, to hope, and yes… to cry. What better time of life than the Holidays to open that little door to our hearts that we slam shut and lock most of the time.

We are all puzzle pieces-some too short, some too tall, some missing pieces of ourselves. Yet we all bring special gifts to others in our lives. In this Nativity story, you will meet 3 people, a Farmer, a Miner, and an Artisan, whose common works produce uncommon results, showing that some of our gifts to others aren’t the ones we think they are. Travel back in time with us to the days of caravans and wisemen, to trading trinkets in the Great Market of Petra, and to what gifts really matter when we follow a new star in the sky.
