Chynna Phillips & My Earlobes
Last updated on: October 10, 2012 at 10:04 am By DeWayne Hamby
As an audiophile-turned-journalist, I have my share of stories from the musical trenches. I love to tell them and my friends are so nice to oblige me by listening. There are funny moments backstage, bewildering memories singing with an artist in the studio or even hosting a birthday part in a hotel room. But thankfully Chynna Phillips provided me with the story to beat all others. When I was a teenager watching Wilson Phillips parade around on that beach in... Read more

Personalizing Your Facebook News Feed
Last updated on: October 4, 2012 at 7:54 am By DeWayne Hamby
For a while, I’ve meant to write a short tutorial on de-cluttering Facebook news feeds. With last night’s Presidential debate still so fresh in my mind and hearing social media feedback, perhaps there’s no better time than the present. Full disclosure: I realize I am a chief of the political posters, perhaps because I feel that the direction the country is headed is at least as important as what we made for dinner or how lousy your day is going.... Christians on (Reality) TV
Last updated on: September 27, 2012 at 6:20 am By DeWayne Hamby
You may have been surprised to watch Survivor last night (Sept. 26) and hear a contestant speaking in “tongues.” Roxy Morris, a seminary student from Brooklyn, in a private moment on the beach, began to pray “in the Spirit,” using what is commonly referred to as glossolalia or “speaking in tongues.” It surprised me, as I’m sure it did other Christians and also viewers who’d never heard it before. Within seconds, Roxy identified herself as a Bible-believing Pentecostal Christian and... Read more

LISTEN: Warren Barfield’s “The Time Is Now”
Last updated on: August 2, 2016 at 11:28 am By DeWayne Hamby
I’m very excited about Warren Barfield’s new record, Redbird. It won’t be out until October but he’s giving a preview by releasing the song “The Time Is Now” online, which is the song I really can’t stop listening to. Warren taps into the idea of being intimidated for standing up for your beliefs. To me, it’s an energizing anthem for not backing down and speaking up. Have you ever felt like everyone wishes you would just be quiet and not... Read more

I Remember Yusef
Last updated on: September 25, 2012 at 11:41 am By DeWayne Hamby
As children, our inquisitive minds yearned to discover more and more about the world we were born into. We crawled, we walked and then we ran. And our parents tried to keep up. We walked through forests and imagined them to be other planets. We crossed creeks, thinking them to be oceans. And like sponges, our minds soaked in every new experience. Many memories have faded over the years, sometimes causing me to doubt their very existence. Did I dream... Read more

Movie Preview: ’42’ – Filmed in Chattanooga
Last updated on: August 2, 2016 at 11:28 am By DeWayne Hamby
I love sports movies (way more than actually watching the actual games) and this one looks great. The reason it showed up on my radar is because here in Chattanooga, they had open casting calls and it was filmed downtown at the old stadium. Harrison Ford was here, although I’m not sure how much time he spent enjoying the city. I’m definitely going to see it, hoping that I’ll spot some familiar faces. Read more

11 Indispensable Relationships You Can’t Be Without : A Book Review
Last updated on: August 27, 2012 at 6:14 am By DeWayne Hamby
“No man is an island entire of itself.”—John Donne One of the key reasons leaders fail is isolation and insulation, shutting out the others who can assist and enhance your leadership. When pride tells a person that he or she is self-sufficient, trouble is looming. To that end, Leonard Sweet takes aim at the concept of “Lone Ranger” leadership in his book 11 Indispensable Relationships You Can’t Be Without. Combing through biblical stories, Sweet discovers 11 models of relationships that... Read more

Sylvester Stallone on Church, Faith
Last updated on: August 10, 2012 at 5:17 am By DeWayne Hamby
Back when he was promoting Rocky Balboa, Sylvester Stallone spoke to Christian media about the film. I participated in a conference call and he shared about his faith and some points about being connected to a church. I’ve referenced them before so I wanted to share them here: “Without the church, it’s like having a boat without a rudder. All my life I’ve been involved with exercise. I know a lot about the body, but you need help. You need... Read more
